The Cat and Co. take to the high seas in search of whales, dolphins, and porpoises—those aquatic mammals known as cetaceans. While learning how cetaceans stay warm without hair, have teeth or baleen, swim in troops, spyhop, spin, breach, and see via ecolocation, kids are introduced to almost 20 different species—including sperm, right, humpback, and blue whales; Gulf, spectacled, and finless porpoise; and boto, common, hourglass, and bottlenose dolphins. This rhyme book tells all about whales, dolphins, and porpoises. From similarities and differences, to the many species of each, to they eat and swim, this book is filled with facts and pictures of whales. Genre: Informational/ fantasy Critique: This book is a good example of informational because it provides and defines many vocabulary words that relate to whales in an engaging way. Media: cartoon A Whale of a Tale by Bonnie Worth is part of the "Cat in the Hat Learning Library" books which teach on different topics using the characters from Dr. Seuss books. This non-fiction book specifically looks at cetaceans: what they are, the different types of cetaceans and how they are like and unlike humans. The book uses a rhyming technique and Dr. Seuss type of language to humor and engage the audience in learning. Worth includes an index to concepts, glossary and a "for further reading" section that gives more information on cetaceans and defines terms used in the book. This book is at a reading level of 2nd grade and above. The illustrations in A Whale of a Tale are colorful with accurate depictions of each cetacean. However, the characters in the story travel on "Captain McElligot's Cetacean Station" which goes all over the ocean. Other topics in this book includes the idea of echolocation, how cetaceans eat and migration. The book also includes a mini-quiz about finding the differences between dolphins and porpoises. This book can be used in a lesson on oceans. aucune critique | ajouter une critique
