Based on new anthropological discoveries and fresh research of ancient Near Eastern, Greek, Roman, Jewish and early Christian texts, this book investigates the mystery of who Mary really was and what role she played in Jesus' life and ancient society. In the tradition of the historical Jesus books, this book looks at Mary in the context of her social, political and religious settings, and comes up with some very provocative conclusions. Very insightful. I enjoyed reading about the history of early Christianity and the rise in the worship of the Virgin Mary especially as a former Catholic. I used to be a Daughter of Mary as a girl and always thought in the back of my mind that she was like the Goddesses in the mythology I read about. I never saw it written more clearly as to how her devotion was negative to women as well. Definitely makes me want to read up more on the subject. ( )
