Good example of what goes wrong when authors, however well-informed, project future trends without properly studying history. since Bridges commented on and predicted 'the end of jobs as we know them' both the numbers in employment and the percentage of people 'in work' have increased, except during economic downturns. The proportion of self-employed may have increased, but only gently, as has the proportion of 'prtfolio worlers'. One thing Bridges did get right was that 'the work itself'continues to change, even for someone carrying the same job title. But then, this has always been the case, the only difference being that more of us recognise such change as a positive norm. ( )
