For almost three decades, Luigi has had to play second fiddle to his flashier, albeit shorter brother Mario, having to battle numerous bad guys only to have somebody else get the girl. No longer, in New Super Luigi U, which will doubtless appeal to anyone that likes to root for the underdog.
New Super Luigi U is set up almost exactly like the other titles in Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros platform adventure franchise. The layout is mostly two-dimensional, with many of the 80 levels looking strikingly similar to those from other Super Mario Bros titles, like the ones set underground and in the fiery castle. Yet here, it is all Luigi, all the time, with no Mario to speak of. Up to five players can join in simultaneously on either the Wii remote control, Wii U Gamepad, or Wii U Pro controller.
Fans of Super Mario Bros will easily slip into the familiar controls and rhythms of the game. New Super Luigi U is enjoyable, relaxing experience, comforting to those who know the franchise well, and easy to conquer no matter your skill level. Gamers looking for a greater challenge or realistic graphics will most likely need to look elsewhere. ( )
