True story about a twentysomething American fighter pilot who enlists in the Spanish Air Force to fight against Franco in the mid-1930s. He enters Spain on a faked passport and gets to work, shooting down enemy planes by day and rendez-vousing with local young ladies by night. As you probably already wondered, yes, he does meet and is befriended by Hemingway (see refs to Tinker in the official Hemingway Index). Their last meeting comes at Harry's Bar in Paris. Tinker doesn't have a US passport, so Hemingway agrees to vouch for him down at the US consulate. Wonderful writing by a first time author. Engaging, humorous and refreshing prose. The original 1938 edition was published by Funk and Wagnalls. Reprinted in 1992 by Time-Life Books. This book is highly regarded by students of the Spanish Civil War. Tragic, self-inflicted ending for the author foreshadows Hemingway's own demise. aucune critique | ajouter une critique

Frank G. Tinker was a freelance US pilot who signed up with the Republican forces in Spain because he didn't like Mussolini. He was also attracted by the prospect of adventure and a generous pay cheque. Once over in Spain he took on the bombers and fighter pilots lent to the Fascist rebels by Hitler and Mussolini, who used the Spanish Civil War as a practice ground for the mass bombing of civilian populations. Tinker chalked up the largest number of acknowledged kills with a total of 8 Junkers, Fiats and Messerschmitts. When he returned to the US he was unable to rejoin the Armed Forces and, depressed by Franco's victory, he was found in a hotel room in June 1939 with an empty bottle of whisky and a bullet in his head. This is his account of his experiences in Spain. Aucune description trouvée dans une bibliothèque |
