An eight-year-old girl named Harriet is determined to climb Longs Peak in Colorado with her father. Her mother had been aspiring to climb this mountain on her next birthday, but unfortunately, she passed away before achieving that goal. Harriet and her father set out to climb Longs Peak. They face lots of challenges, and her father is unable to continue climbing. Harriet faces all of the "surprises," as their guide calls it, without him as she continues to climb. After the pain-staking ascent, she finally achieves her mom's wishes when she reaches the peak and becomes the youngest person to climb Longs Peak. This was a sweet story and has an inspiring character, but I did not love the way the text was written. The characters are not developed and the plot is not very complex. I also felt the writing was a little wordy. Overall, this text was good with a strong message of perseverance. ( )

"High As A Hawk" tells the story of Harriet's historic climb in the Rocky Mountains. Harriet wanted to fulfill her mother's dream of reaching the top of Longs Peak. She needed help from Mr. Mills, the famous mountain guide, to complete the climb. She began the hike with her father and Mr. Mills, but her father quickly realized he could not complete the climb. Harriet and Mr. Mills went onto face dangerous conditions and almost did not make it out alive. After a lot of hard work, Harriet and Mr. Mills reach the 14,255-foot summit of Longs Peak. Harriet was only 8 years old and became the youngest person to successfully make it to the top. I enjoyed this book because it tells the story of perseverance and shows that age is just a number. This read is great for anyone who has lost someone close and is determined to carry out that lost ones dream. After the death of Harriet's mother at a very young age, she is beyond motivated and inspired to carry out her mothers dream of climbing to the top of Long Peak Mountain. The author did a great job capturing the hardships that come with accomplishing this task. The Illustrations add the touch of expression and scenery that make this story come to life. ( )

After her mother's death, Harriet became determine to play out her mother's dream of reaching the summit of Longs Peak. She became the youngest person to do so. Based off a true story, this historical fiction was told beautifully highlighting the large amount of strength that an 8 year old can have. My favorite part was when she finally gave up and wanted to go back down the mountain but Mr. Mills wouldn't let her, pushing her to go a little further. She did and she reached the summit. If she would of gave up that close to her goal I might have cried. But it was satisfying to see the last illustration of Harriet standing on that summit arms outstretched and a hawk circling the sky.
