Newly engaged Kitty and Matt are on their way to meet a crucial witness in a trial, Matt having been employed to look after him until the verdict. The train pulls into the station, there is an ungodly scream, and, well I never, said Mr Simon Travers is found murdered in the first-class compartment. As the compartment had no corridor, the number of suspects is limited, like a locked-room mystery. And so, as ever, our sleuthing duo set to finding the killer. And when a second person is murdered the list of suspects decreases by one. If you liked the previous books in the series then you will, of course, by equally invested in this. The developing back story of Kitty's mother's murder rumbles along nicely in the background, and with the first murder victim having no close relatives, Matt finds himself becoming the owner of Bertie, a doleful and mischievous cocker spaniel. What better way to improve the series than with a cute dog!! Just a lot of fun, with the usual dose of feminism, snobbery and the truly dreadful Mrs Craven. Great stuff. 1930s, excop, private-investigators, murder, murder-investigation, law-enforcement, cosy-mystery, historical-fiction, assassins, jewelry-heist, relatives, relationships, family, mystery, verbal-humor, suspense The publisher's blurb is a good hook, and the story itself is another winner. The due diligence that Kitty and her fiance work so hard at is hampered only by the times in which they live. No spoilers. This is not an unbiased review because I love the characters and plots (complete with obscure twists and red herrings) in this series. For those who haven't read any of the others, this can stand alone. But why? Despite being part of a series, you can't feel like you're out of the loop because the author keeps inserting useful tidbits. I requested and received a free ebook copy from Bookouture via NetGalley. All aboard a train bound for... murder. Kitty Underhay is looking forward to a week of long lunches and wedding planning with her husband-to-be, Captain Matthew Bryant. But the plan is derailed when he is called on to collect a former comrade-in-arms, arriving on the 15:50 from Bakerloo. As the train bearing Simon Travers pulls up to the platform, a piercing scream rises over the screech of its brakes. Travers is dead in his seat, a dagger in his heart. Who gave this defenceless man a one-way ticket to the next life? And why? And could Matt's close connection put him at risk? Only a few individuals had access to Travers's compartment, and Kitty must find out which of these seemingly benign passengers is in fact a cross-country killer. But when Kitty's prime suspect, the travelling salesman with no merchandise, is found murdered, she is stumped. Until she makes the connection between the two victims and realises that this murderer has an even more deadly destination in mind. Can she stop them before they strike again? Or will Kitty's own next stop be the graveyard? A pitch-perfect and totally gripping Golden Age historical cozy mystery! Perfect for fans of Agatha Christie, T.E. Kinsey and Lee Strauss. I liked that her partner was very supportive of her and didn't try to take over anything.
