Today; During arguably the worst week of Esso's life, an accident knocks him into an incredible world--a place beyond space or time, where he can see glimpses of the past and future. But if what he sees there is true, he might not have much longer to live, unless he can use his new gift to change the course of history. Tomorrow; Rhia's past is filled with questions, none of which she expects a new physics tutor to answer. But Dr. Esso's not here to help Rhia. He's here because he needs her help--to unravel a tragedy that happened fifteen years ago. One that holds the key not only to Rhia's past, but to a future worth fighting for. Trigger warnings: Gang violence
Looks like a good YA Afrofuturism book.
Update: 6/10, this book wasn't a good YA sci-fi novel. The story was very boring and drags a lot, and it was very disconnected, until the end, it felt like I was reading two entirely different, yet equally boring stories. Both main characters made some really bad decisions for no reason (Esso got expelled for a fight and getting some demerits for being late, and his grades also fell as well. Rhia argued with an umpire's decision, swore and even spat at her, and Rhia was kicked out of the football team!)
The entire concept of the Upper World was just foreshadowing events and seeing the future, which was boring. The concept that the future was decided for the characters by atoms was kind of depressing as well. I would've liked to see more moments of Rhia and Olivia, it was very interesting to see their relationship. Go read [b:1984|61439040|1984|George Orwell|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1657781256l/61439040._SX50_.jpg|153313], for a well written dystopian novel, though it doesn't have time travel.
