The loss of a loved one brings together childhood friends Molly and Oscar reigniting romantic feelings as well as Molly’s insecurities that she doesn’t fit into Oscar’s world.

Molly’s hang up about fitting into Oscar’s world is where this didn’t entirely work for me. The book mentions several times that Molly was practically raised in the wild by her stuntman dad yet it never really showed instances where Molly lacked sophistication, even her transitions from casual clothes to more fashionable went off without a hitch, it’s not like she had any taste-level issues while shopping, she didn’t wobble in heels, nothing. As for Oscar’s “world” the book never shows him at a high society event or indicates that he enjoys that sort of thing and he wasn’t even pretentious about his palatial apartment when guests create a mess, so it was kind of challenging to buy into Molly’s conflict when there weren’t enough scenes to substantiate her feeling the way she did.

I enjoyed everything else about this though, the cat who’s partial to Molly, Oscar’s rooftop was enviable and easy to visualize, and how Oscar’s mom ended up having a bit of an arc rather than being one-note. I also liked the inclusion of a handful of characters with Down’s Syndrome, they weren’t as involved in the story as I might have preferred, still it’s good when books are populated with a variety people like life is. And lastly, I thought Molly and Oscar were sweet together, the chemistry was there, as was the absolute support and ease in conversation that you’d expect from a nearly lifelong friendship. ( )
