Fiction. Literature. Science Fiction. HTML:NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER ? Thrawn and his allies race to save the Chiss Ascendancy from an unseen enemy in the second book in the epic Star Wars: Thrawn Ascendancy trilogy from bestselling author Timothy Zahn.
Thrawn??s latest triumph still rests newly on his shoulders. He has led the Chiss to victory and brought glory to the House of Mitth, but the true threat to the Ascendancy has not yet been extinguished. Their foes do not send threats or ultimatums, do not mass ships on the edge of the Chaos. Their weapons come cloaked in smiles and generosity: Gifts offered freely. Services granted unconditionally.
Across the Ascendancy, seemingly inconsequential events could herald the doom of the Chiss. As Thrawn and the Expansionary Defense Fleet rally to uncover the plot, they discover a chilling truth: Rather than invade Chiss capitals or pillage resources, their enemy strikes at the very foundation of the Ascendancy, seeking to widen the rifts between the Nine Ruling Families and the Forty Great Houses below. As rivalry and suspicion sow discord among allies, each warrior must decide what matters most to them: the security of their family or the survival of the Ascendancy i

Good, and complicated. Sometimes confusing, but I still give it 5 stars because... well, it's ZAHN. Plus listening to the audiobook with Marc Thompson makes it a near-cinematic experience. I appreciate a narrator who makes clearly distinctive voices for the wide variety of characters. (was that a "Werner Herzog" in one character?) ( )

"For those who recognize that “the greater good” is seldom good for all"
As much as I would've liked if Thrawn had his own pov in these books, seeing the story from the perspective of characters that -for the most part- aren't found of him at all but reluctantly admit his geniuses is delightful.
The second book has a more structured plot after setting the scene in the first, and we finally can see what story this trilogy is going to tell and the ties with the previous Thrawn books.
Uniquely, all the parallel stories entertained me and added a sense of puzzle as you watch the ploy unfold from multiple layers.
Unfortunately, this happened with a step back from characters I liked quite a lot from the first book, such as Che'ri and Ar'lani, whom I hope gain their protagonism back on the last installment. ( )

In Star Wars: Thrawn Ascendancy: Greater Good, Timothy Zahn continues the narrative he began in the previous book, Chaos Rising, in which different factions in the Chaos begin organizing to threaten the Chiss Ascendancy. In this second book, a mysterious figure named Jixtus is revealed as the mastermind behind the Nikardun attack in the previous book. With Thrawn occupied in seeking out any remnant of the Nikardun, Jixtus sends a ground called the Agbui to ingratiate themselves with some of the families of middling power in the Chiss hierarchy. Thrawn begins to discover the remnants of other factions in the Chaos, but how they connect to the Agbui in the Chiss Ascendancy is not revealed until later. Zahn weaves an elaborate plot worthy of any political thriller while continuing to set the stage for Thrawn’s eventual decision to offer allegiance to Emperor Palpatine in a bid to ally the Chiss with the Emperor. Book 2 of the Thrawn Ascendency Trilogy

I read this out of sequence and before book 1 Chaos Rising and didn't miss a beat.

Fantastic audiobook listen. The narrator does a spectacular job recreating Thrawn's voice.

The battle scenes are fast and keep you reading/listening. The intrigue behind the scenes is less important. Zahn has a masterful way of writing that captures your interest and keeps you reading. The pacing is modulated and changes for certain scenes.

The cool and collected way Thrawn approaches each new situation in this book really solidifies him as one of my all-time favorite characters in this Universe.

I am once again begging Timothy Zahn to let Thrawn fail at anything, and suffer an whole consequence.

Though I guess it's unfair of me to say that in a book where we're clearly setting up SOMETHING, or a whole lot of things--there's a lot of pieces moving, and, as other reviews have pointed out, not much Thrawn though we are establishing more and more his messy relationships with others, and how much other Chiss hate him, which--relatable. I can't believe I have to wait ANOTHER whole entire book for this to fall apart and him to have any consequences, but that's the way the cookie crumbles I guess.

Unlike many other folks, I actually did enjoy the other characters--I liked seeing into their worlds, the conflicts people have. Whole book series about Thalias, thanks. But for the most part, I spent this book whining about how much I don't like Thrawn and then waiting for something to happen. And we're starting to see it, but oof, so slowly. ( )
