London, 1680. For the young Charles Rochester, Marquess of Bolton and heir to the Duke of Norfolk, desiring another man is unacceptable. His fierce attraction to the new scullery boy must be suffocated at all cost. But it's not easy to silence your heart when the people who should understand you end up betraying you, and the only one loyal seems to be the one you're desperately trying to avoid. But Dorian Pratt knows he's hopelessly lost the second he first lays eyes on his new master. As a lowly servant, he understands he can never have him, but he can't stop his body-and heart-from reacting to the dark, handsome nobleman. When dangerous secrets hidden within the walls of Norfolk Manor come to light, everything collapses. Charles has only one hope for hanging onto Dorian, but to make it work he must be prepared to sacrifice the most valuable gift God has bestowed upon him: his very humanity.Sins will not be forgiven and there's always a price to pay when blood is spilled.Warning! Due to some raw content of a violent nature which some may find upsetting, as well as the depiction of graphic sex between men, Rise of a Nobleman is recommended only for consenting adults. Here's what Valentina's Italian readers are saying: "I was really impressed by how the author managed to create a character who does evil things without actually being an evil man."-Mon 74, Amazon.it customer"The fast pace without any boring stretches keeps you glued to the pages. Then the words, the way the characters are portrayed, how their emotions are described-it's really remarkable."-Eva31, Amazon.it customer"Don't expect the classic mushy nonsense. These characters suffer. The emotional states of the two protagonists are so well described that you find yourself rejoicing and suffering right along with them."-Amazon.it customer Aucune description trouvée dans une bibliothèque |

Maybe it is my fault. Maybe I should pay more attention the warnings (raw content of a violent nature), but I've read books with violence before. Some of my favourite m/m books have the most horrific horror scenes. Maybe I should have read the blurb more closely (Charles has only one hope for hanging onto Dorian, but to make it work he must be prepared to sacrifice the most valuable gift God has bestowed upon him: his very humanity.) But to be honest I don't think this would have made a difference. I found Charles to be an unlikable character from the very beginning--long before he had to make sacrifices--and nothing he subsequently did redeemed himself in my eyes. In fact many of his actions actually turned my stomach.
I actually thought this would be a paranormal story at the beginning but that sort of fizzled away to nothing, leaving a dark, morally dubious tale which I struggled to read because each brush of Charles on my psyche left me depressed and reluctant to explore his character further.
If you like dark tales with no real redemption arc, and scenes of dubious consent, and mental and physical abuse, then I've no doubt you will enjoy this. It is a tale that will continue in the next book, so maybe Charles gets his redemption there, but unfortunately I don't think that I will be reading it.
I will look out for further work by this author and if she ever writes anything a tad fluffier I'd probably read it.
