I always approach self-help books with some hesitation given the fact that so many simply rehash material from previous works. Having set the bar relatively low, I found “Cleaning Up Your Mental Mess” interesting and even helpful. I’m sure the fact that I’ve never read any of Leaf’s previous works contributed to my generally positive experience. While I haven’t yet practiced her five-step process for dealing with toxic thinking and stress, her system appears to be rooted in common sense and bolstered by research. Speaking of which -- the book is heavy on dense scientific research and jargon. What’s more, the author is unnecessarily repetitive – especially in the first half of the book.
