But when Celia dies as a result of a bizarre incident revolving a steep hill and a cable car. Maggie is drawn into the Sloan mansion -- and into the Sloans' troubles. The whole family -- Celia's daughter Lindy, her hard-drinking son Mark, and her psychiatrist husband Henry -- is distraught over the accident. And the fact that the police are calling it murder and questioning them about motives and alibis isn't helping any. Maggie's going to need all the help she can get to figure out what's really going on. Help in the form of former cop Richard Patrick O'Reagan -- who just happened to witness Celia's death by cable car....… (plus d'informations)

There are two sections to this book. The first establishes the characters and not really the mystery, just a tragedy. The second part is where you find the mystery. The second half of the book flows well and makes the book worth reading. ( )

When her half-sister is killed in a gruesome cable car accident, Maggie Elliott must shrug off her own demons and contend with a murderer of diabolical cruelty and cunning. I liked this because it went in several unexpected directions. ( )

A remarkably good book considering the lack of popularity or reviews on LibraryThing. The second book I've read recently where the heroine has gone through some bad experiences prior, apparently, to the start of the series. In this case, the death of her husband in a motorcycle accident sends her through various addictions, including alcohol, tobacco, and food. The minor characters, with their various weaknesses, are also quite interesting, and the plot hangs together neatly. I thought the final confrontation with the villain was a bit staged, like the author thought that every detective story had to end with a cliffhanger, but it's the only real weakness to a very nicely put-together story. I'll be looking for more by this author. ( )
