An interesting enterprise to rethink the idea of folklore in the 21st century comes largely unstuck I'm afraid. There is little darkness in this collection and the variations in the quality of the writing and imagination on display all contribute to a ho-hum collection of barely worthy tales. Cette critique a été écrite dans le cadre des Critiques en avant-première de LibraryThing. Folklore was a pleasure to read! It kept my attention even in these distracting times. Each story was a great length. The ones based on stories I already knew had such unique approaches they felt new. The stories I don't know the original version of I actually want to go and research. This is a book that you can go back to and read again. It is one to recommend to friends. Cette critique a été écrite dans le cadre des Critiques en avant-première de LibraryThing. Folklore is a quick, enjoyable read, well written and put together in the form of short stories that allow the reader to take as much of a bite as they're inclined to at any given time. I read it over the course of a few evenings, one or two stories at a time. The stories are apparently all re-tellings of existing folklore tales. I say "apparently" because there are several which I had not previously heard of. One criticism I have is that there is no mention of the origin of the original tales. This would be useful for readers such as myself who may not have encountered the stories previously. Other than that, and the (very) occasional typo, I'd recommend this to anyone looking for a blend of horror and folk tales. Very enjoyable! I received the ebook as an early reviewers edition. Folklore is a fascinating, dark anthology about legends, which are closer to original fairytales, where there is not always a happy ending, or which are more bloody than our nowadays versions. This book includes ten different stories, from Rumpelstilzken (from his point of view), to a brlliant retelling of the Little Mermaid, to (at least for me) more unknown legends about Black Annis and the Skogsra. Although for some stories it is better if you know the original legend (I had this especially with the Skogsra), all of them can be read like they are. I deeply enjoyed this book, it's a fast and fluent read and I highly recommend it to all fairytale and lore fans out there! The only critique I have is a techniqual one. I had problems with the file working on my tablet. I prefer reading my epubs on Aldiko, with the setting set to a black background. This didn't work with Folklore, I only got black pages, no letters. I have no idea if the problem was with my tablet or with the file, but this, together with the fact, that everytime I accidentally moved the tablet around, the whole book crashed, was a bit of a set back. I consider buying a paperback version of this anthology, cause it is really worth it. I received the ebook as an early reviewers edition. aucune critique | ajouter une critique
Traditional stories and beliefs are where folklores begin. Passed through the generations of storytellers, through word of mouth. These ten stories are based on those traditional folklore stories, passed down to our authors. These are their stories to tell, beautifully pieced together for our enjoyment. I love the cover - it looks so freaking good! - and I love that it wasn't just stories from the "usual suspects" like Celtic and Norse mythology (much as I love them) but there was also a story from Thailand (or South-East Asia) included. It was also cool that some of the stories were told in an old-fashioned manner and some like modern urban fantasies. The story of the Moddey Dhoo and "Sealskin" were my favourites. The book was a diverting read and sometimes pretty creepy. I'd love to own this as a physical edition, too.
I received this book from LibraryThing (with my old account Yuki_Onna) - Thank you, LT! - in exchange for an honest review. ( )
