This wound up being a bit of a drinking game. The book's not awful, but how some scenes are written so repressed, the little moments that read out loud terribly, it's a good bout of fun if you get your friends together and pass the book.
Within a page or two this happens: "Leo wanted a family too. He wanted kids, and wanted to fit in. His plan was to find the right woman and follow family tradition. He’d attempted to fulfill it for a few years now, only to face the reality of being unable to fall in love.
He was now approaching thirty and had decided Amanda was the one he wanted to share the rest of his life with. Love would grow over time, and maybe his expectations were too high? The lightning bolt of passion he’d always hoped would hit him from the heavens might not exist."
I've never read a straight man so ignorant to his homosexuality that cracked me up. Right after this wonderful scene his fecund mother comes in, gets her ass grabbed by the stallion of a dad, and it's a family reunion.
This is all way before Zolt appears and once he did, I was choking reading the lines. “Well, for starters, my parents didn’t like one another very much. And my grandpa was clearly happier after Grandma died. I thought it was just them at first, but high school cured me of all my delusions. I’ve had sex with some guys who had girlfriends. And there was this one with who I was getting it on with for three years. He’d have all those girls, who came and went, but he’d always come back to me when he had an itch to scratch. It was super-hot,”
Also the names. OH! The names! Rain, Leo, Zolt, and Mike for example. Some of these names just do not belong! ( )
