Off the Derech: Why Observant Jews Leave Judaism--How to Respond to the Challenge by Faranak Margolese (2005) It's not a perfect book, but on the whole it's a good analysis of where Orthodox Judaism is currently falling short, leading to widespread defections. My assumption is that the author has since either been ridden out of town on a rail, dismissed, or ignored. Probably the last of those. While the diagnosis isn't bad, the suggested solutions seem nebulous. Granted, anything more concrete would no doubt be rejected out of hand. Actually solving anything is frankly too much to hope for; it's possible she even realizes this and is putting this book out as a first step in hopes others might build on it in time. Frankly, I'm more cynical about it, to put it mildly, but I respect her at least making the effort. (I think I'm one of the people who took the author's web-based survey of those "not observant anymore," as she put it then, but I'm not sure whether I did so in time to be included in the book's statistics.) Off the derech is an eye-opener. It discusses the often neglected emotional and intellectual needs of people who went off the derech, without condescending on those who did. Although it is not a scientific research as such, the book is still a result of many online interviews and case studies. Recommended. aucune critique | ajouter une critique
