High medieval gothic horror, featuring vampire Genevieve, from an undisputed master of macabre fiction. Detlef Sierck, the self-proclaimed greatest playwright in the world, has declared that his next production will be a recreation of the end of the Great Enchanter, Constant Drachenfels - to be staged at the very site of his death, the fortress of Drachenfels itself.

Drachenfels is the name of the castle the party is adventuring too. And the name of the centuries old Enchanter. The adventures, including a vampire, is the party we start the book with as they approach Drachenfels. There is much filler in this novel that makes it unnecessarily longer then it needs to be. But if you read through this filer you have a story that is OKl. But I felt no suspense or horror.

Well written gore yes.Humor, yes. But Horror, No. To be fair the would stand on its own without being in the Warhammer World. But without the Black Library logo I would have never picked up this book. The only thing that stands out is we the reader do not know how the story really ends, at the beginning of the book. But a surviving party member writes a play twenty five years later.

In the play that is acted out in Drachenfels is where we learn about the outcome with the audience. As many have said who read this book what could possibly go wrong having the play at Drachenfels. I just consider this a sword and sorcery story with a twist. I would have probably liked this more in my youth when I read fantasy. Unlike the last Warhammer Fantasy Horror Audio book I reviewed I was happy with the performance of the narrator in the audio book version. ( )

Technically I have a copy of [b:The Vampire Genevieve|657351|The Vampire Genevieve|Jack Yeovil|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1176831572s/657351.jpg|643439], which is a compilation of Drachenfels, Genevieve Undead, Beasts in Velvet and Silver Nails. But after reading this first story, I'm just not interested enough to stick with it for another 500ish pages. (Not least of which, because for a book titled The Vampire Genevieve, she plays very little role in this first story.) That probably tells you more than the rest of this review ever could.

I picked the book up because it had and interesting cover and was about a female vampire. I thought it could be interesting. I didn't actually know what the Warhammer imprint was (proving unequivocally that I'm not as nerdy as I would have given myself credit for), so I didn't know what to expect.

Drachenfels struck me as a pretty run of the mill über-evil overlord tries to take over the world and is defeated by a spunky group of outcasts kind of book. Meh. It took a long time to get going, then came to a lightning-speed conclusion and ending with an everyone lived happily ever after (or not) recap of the characters. I thought the world-building was weak, the character development shallow, and the action all crammed into one end of the story. There were some really funny passages, but for the most part I was uninvested. It wasn't a waste of my time, but I'm not bothering with anymore. ( )

Funnier than I expected, but much less scary than I was hoping for. Actually, it wasn't scary at all; gross sometimes, yes, but that's not the same thing. Also, the story was pretty entertaining at first, but there was a lot of filler and by the end it just devolved into pure cheese, '80s style. Not the worst thing I've ever read, and I did appreciate the humor, but I won't be looking for more by this author. ( )

The first Genevieve Dieudonné knew of the treachery of Ueli the Dwarf was the prod of a blade-end in her right side, just above the hip.
