"Harpreet Singh has a different color for every occasion, from pink for dancing to bhangra beats to red for courage. He especially takes care with his patkas, his turbans, smoothing each one out gently before putting it on. But when Harpreet's mom finds a new job in a snowy town and the family has to move, he finds himself choosing white over and over--all he wants is to be invisible. Will he ever feel a happy sunny yellow again?" --… (plus d'informations)

Expand your student culture understanding with this read that tells about the Sikh belief's and customs. A wonderful story of a student who has come to a new place and must adapt to a new environment and new people. Great selection for students who have moved and had to adapt as well as others to understand the emotions and feelings behind new classmates they may get. Students learn about colors and shapes along with parts of the Sikh belief and how you should always be you and do what brings you joy!

Harpreet Singh chooses the color of his patka carefully to express how he's feeling - but when his family moves, he feels shy and sad and invisible. When he finds and returns a girl's hat, she becomes a friend, and Harpreet enjoys all his colors of patkas again.

Back matter includes a note about the Sikh tradition of wearing head coverings.

Primary. This book is about a boy who likes to wear a different color to represent how he's feeling. When his family moves he gets sad and starts dressing in less colors, but then he makes a friend who helps him get back to himself. I would use this as a read aloud for a lesson about expressing your emotions and an art lesson about how colors can have meanings.

The book had a wonderful storyline which contains Sikh culture. The main character is a little boy named Harpreet Singh who has many colored patkas. He expresses himself through the colors of his patkas. When Harpreet moved, he was unhappy and always wore a white patka until he met Abby. Not only will elementary school students can learn about about colors, shapes, emotions, they will also learn about friendships and patkas associated with Sikhism. ( )
