This picture book introduces readers to nineteen powerhouse Muslim women who rose up and made their voices heard. Long ago, Muslim women rode into battle to defend their dreams. They opened the doors to the world's oldest library. They ruled, started movements, and spread knowledge. Today, Muslim women continue to make history. Once upon a time, they were children with dreams, just like you. Discover the true stories of nineteen unstoppable Muslim women of the twenty-first century who have risen above challenges, doubts, and sometimes outright hostility to blaze trails in a wide range of fields. Whether it was the culinary arts, fashion, sports, government, science, entertainment, education, or activism, these women never took "no" for an answer, or allowed themselves to be silenced. Instead, they worked to rise above and not only achieve their dreams, but become influential leaders.… (plus d'informations)

Inspiring collection of true stories about 19 Muslim women who did great things in their lives. Iran's first female judge and Nobel Peace Prize recipient Shirin Ebadi, film maker Sharmeen Obaaid-Chinoy, mathematician Maryam Mirzakhani and activist Malala Yousafzai are just a few of the amazing women celebrated in this picture book. The colourful illustrations and short chapters make this book an easy sell for any young reader. ( )

Brief biographies and beautiful, cartoon/comic-style portraits of over a dozen Muslim women, each with very different careers, intersectional identities, and connections to Islam. I enjoyed that this book shows that to be Muslim is as diverse an experience as it is to be Christian — something that is rarely discussed by the dominant media. For example, we meet English and Japanese fashion designer Hana Tajima, who converted to Islam and designs modest clothing options for major fashion retailers. We also meet Nura Afia, a makeup vlogger and model from Colorado; Maria Toorpakai Wazir, a Pakistani woman who disguised herself as a boy in order to play squash and other street games; Ilhan Omar, Somali-American congresswoman; and many more such fascinating, inspiring individuals. I would have loved to see a self identified queer or gender queer individual biographied in the book! ( )

Illustrated essays describe 19 contemporary Muslim women from around the world, their accomplishments, and impact on the world. The positive tone of the essays are meant to inspire, relate and reveal. ( )
