I like the technology/magic, and there's an interesting mix of cultures and creatures. The main character is strong and gutsy, and I'm glad we didn't gloss over her panic attacks. There's a lot to like about this book, and that's why I'm rounding up my rating. But it also has some flaws. There is way too much happening at the end. The author pulls in loose threads from everywhere in order to tie off the story with a neat bow. Every drama is maximised for effect, and seriously, does everyone want to join dna with Binti? It's just a bit much. ( ) Some Sci-Fi is about the world. Although this story takes place in a compelling world, the story itself focuses on the quest to know one's self. What the setting provides that makes this a deeply Sci-Fi story (rather than a story that merely happens to have aliens and spaceships) is the way that Okorafor uses various alien species and technology to explore change and belonging. Yet this story is not all about exotic worlds. Much of the story takes place in Africa and is full of rich cultural references. Although this was originally published as three separate novellas, the collection itself reads as a single novel with a major story arc that ties together the originally separate parts. If you did not know they were published separately, the only thing that would clue you are the few brief recap paragraphs. Binti is the first of her people to be accepted at Oomza University and while her decision goes against everything the Himba believe, she knows it's the right choice for her. But when a hostile alien race attacks the ship on which she's traveling it sets in motion a chain of events that will completely change Binti's life. It's a solid sci fi tale that I enjoyed but because I was reading so slowly (my fault, not the book's), I can't really rave about it. The characters and world are well crafted and I appreciate a sci fi tale where the main character is Black African and the exploration of the community Okorafor has created. Recommended for fans of the genre.

"Binti, a young Himba girl with the chance of a lifetime: to attend the prestigious Oomza University. Despite her family's concerns, Binti's talent for mathematics and her aptitude with astrolabes make her a prime candidate to undertake this interstellar journey. But everything changes when the jellyfish-like Medusae attack Binti's spaceship, leaving her the only survivor. Now, Binti must fend for herself, alone on a ship full of the beings who murdered her crew, with five days until she reaches her destination. There is more to the history of the Medusae--and their war with the Khoush--than first meets the eye. If Binti is to survive this voyage and save the inhabitants of the unsuspecting planet that houses Oomza Uni, it will take all of her knowledge and talents to broker the peace. Collected now for the first time in omnibus form." -- Aucune description trouvée dans une bibliothèque |
