Can Lety find her voice before it's too late? Lety Muñoz's first language is Spanish, and she likes to take her time putting her words together. She loves volunteering at the Furry Friends Animal Shelter because the dogs and cats there don't care if she can't always find the right word. When the shelter needs a volunteer to write animal profiles, Lety jumps at the chance. But grumpy classmate Hunter also wants to write profiles--so now they have to work as a team. Hunter's not much of a team player, though. He devises a secret competition to decide who will be the official shelter scribe. Whoever helps get their animals adopted the fastest wins. The loser scoops dog food. Lety reluctantly agrees, but she's worried that if the shelter finds out about the contest, they'll kick her out of the volunteer program. Then she'll never be able to adopt Spike, her favorite dog at the shelter!--… (plus d'informations)

This book is about a girl, Lety, who is an ESL learner, and volunteers at an animal shelter where she writes stories about the animals. She meets friends and goes on a journey to get back a friend's pet. The book is a great read for the classroom because it gets students excited about what they can do with their hobbies and with what they are learning about English within the classroom. ( )

Awesome -- just the right mix of story and sweetness and trouble and forgiveness. And set in an animal shelter, so lots of pet love going on as well. I love that it is about writing, and standing up for yourself, and taking your time to find the words you need. ( )

Lety Out Loud is inspired by the author's childhood. In this book Lety volunteers at an animal shelter and starts writing biographies for cats and dogs who are in the shelter. I would recommend this book because it is one of those books that gets you interested in things other than yourself, and this book could be used well when going over narrative texts in an ELAR class. I just read Lety Out Loud by Angela Cervantes and really enjoyed the book. This is a middle grade read about a girl and her friends who volunteer at an Animal Shelter. During their time they face discrimination and fear of not being good enough because they are learning the English Language. All of the characters learn about empathy and judgment in this wonderful novel. ( )

Lety Munoz's first language is Spanish, and since moving to the States, she has attended summer school to improve her English - but this summer, she's volunteering at the animal shelter instead. With encouragement from her friends, Brisa and Kennedy, Lety signs up to be the "shelter scribe," writing descriptions for each dog and cat waiting to be adopted....but Hunter Farmer (yes, his real name) signs up too, and Hunter's friend Mario and Kennedy make it into a contest. Lety and Hunter reluctantly go along with it; Lety is worried that her English won't stand up to Hunter's "high-school level" reading and writing, but it turns out the contest is important to Hunter for another reason: his parents divorced, and his dad gave away Hunter's dog, who ended up at a shelter. Lety is determined to help Hunter get his dog back - even when they learn that he has been adopted by another family.

A sweet middle grade novel that both showcases and normalizes the experience of all the "ELL" kids throughout the country. ( )
