Fiction. Mystery. HTML:

A cat, a crook, and a confused neighbor cause mirth in this killer cozy mystery short story.

Savvy hairstylist and super sleuth Marla Vail visits her friend Tally who just got out of the hospital after a serious car accident. Marla has been caring for Tally's baby and is sad but grateful to return him to his mother. She and Tally reconcile their friendship that had become estranged before the crash.

Happy to have her friend back, Marla is about to leave when a knock summons her to the door. It's a distraught elderly neighbor who claims her cat is missing. Marla, unable to turn down a person in need, accompanies the lady home. But when Marla enters the house, she realizes much more is missing than a lost feline. The place has been ransacked, and when she calls the police, they inform her that the neighborhood has been beset by a series of thefts. Can she find the crooks before they cause another cat'astrophe?

Note: This story follows Hair Brained, #14 in the Bad Hair Day Mysteries.

Bonus One: An interview with Marla
Bonus Two: 5 new recipes!
Bonus Three: A sneak preview of Trimmed to Death

"A fast-paced read with charming characters. It left me with a "feel good" type of feeling. It even includes a nice interview with Marla. It's a very nice touch and gives the reader even more insight into the character. I loved this book. It has an adorable cat in it, what could be better?" 5 stars! Socrates Book Reviews

"A missing cat leads Marla on a caper to find a neighborhood theft ring. A fast-paced, albeit brief, visit with dear friends from the Bad Hair Day Series." Muddy Rose Reviews

If you follow this series, you will know that Marla's best friend Tally was involved in a very serious accident in the last book. This short story picks up shortly after the last book ended, with Tally becoming conscious, going to rehab and finally getting out of the hospital. When Marla takes Marla's back to her (she and her husband were caring for him while Tally could not) one of Tally's neighbours shows up at her door asking for help to find her missing cat. Marla is concerned about the neighbour, so off she goes to help. This is a short, sweet story with a quick mystery to solve. It is a nice way to keep us interested in the series between books, but also to fill us in on what happened to Tally. I have read most of this series and I have enjoyed every one. I am looking forward to #15, Trimmed to Death. I requested and received a copy of this book from the author to read. The opinions stated are my own. ( )

Hairball Hijinks: A Bad Hair Day Cozy Mystery Short Story by Nancy J. Cohen is the perfect bridge between Bad Hair Day Cozy Mystery #14, Hair Brained, and the next book in the series, Trimmed to Death, due out in September. Hair Brained dealt with some very serious issues and readers were left not knowing how serious the consequences or far-reaching the aftermath would be. That was a great way to end Hair Brained – perfect lead in for the next book. But in Hairball Hijinks author Cohen came up with an ingenious way to satisfy long-time readers who want to know exactly what happened next as well as first time readers who will be captivated by the cat’astrophe and get to know hairdresser Marla Vail. This in-betweener wraps up the loose ends from Hair Brained so that a lengthy recap is not necessary before jumping right into Trimmed to Death. Nancy J. Cohen provided an epilogue to her newsletter readers that served this purpose but Hairball Hijinks is even better! Not only do we find out what happened next, but we are treated to a delightful story with Tally’s elderly neighbor, PLUS an interview with Marla, 5 new recipes, and a sneak preview of Trimmed to Death.

I have spent a lot of time with Marla Vail. You never know what to expect but you know you are in for a good mystery and a good time. Hairball Hijinks is another winner, a fun short read that will whet your appetite for Trimmed to Death. ( )
