Terrorists-for-hire have created a weapon that can induce earthquakes and cause dormant volcanoes to erupt. One terrifying side-effect of the weapon is that prior to the devastation, the vibrations drive ordinary people to suicide and violence. A wave of madness begins sweeping the country, beginning with a muder-suicide in Congress. Joe Ledger and his team go on a wild hunt to stop the terrorists and uncover the global super-power secretly funding them. At every step the stakes increase as it becomes clear that the end-game of this campaign of terror is igniting the Yellowstone caldera, the super-volcano that could destroy America.… (plus d'informations)

This book builds on so much of the previous books and that makes sense since this is the last book in the series. Never fear though there is a spin off. So much of what Joe and the DMS team have done to try and keep the world safe will come back to be used against them in this book. The bad guys are using tech from Extinction Machine to cause earthquakes in Washington DC. There is a lot of flashbacks with the bad guys so you know just how long the wheels have been in motion for the action to happen in this book. The DMS still hasn’t gotten back to full strength from actions in previous books and they are seriously hampered by bad guys that are in the government. A good story with lots of people from the series making at least a cameo on the page. ( )

You know, for a series that tends to follow a similar blueprint for the first third of each book, Maberry just continues to kick serious ass with the Joe Ledger series. And as high as the stakes get raised each time, he also finds a way to raise the ceiling every time.

A couple of books back, Maberry delved into the Cthulhu mythos of Lovecraft, but I was somewhat underwhelmed with the final results of that particular novel. I felt it was the weakest of the entire series.

He doesn't dive back into it this time, he friggin' roars back into the nightmare world of Lovecraft. But that's not enough. No, he brings back some infernal machines from a previous novel, and aliens from yet another.

And goddamn if he doesn't make it all work.

If Maberry keeps writing Ledger novels (and I know he will), I will always be the first guy in the queue to buy them. ( )
