The art is still shit, but Donny Cates' writing can elevate damn near anything, and does so here.

We get a lot more of Perry, which is a great thing, but it's the brilliant little touches that absolutely make this series fun to read. Somehow, Cates manages to wring new enjoyment out of old tropes, especially the whole having to be invited in thing, and crosses.

Often the first book is the best, as the creative team blows their wad on getting all the fun stuff out. But in this case, volume two is much better than one, because Cates had to build up the characters before he started messing with them. ( )
