Harlan D. Fowler [1895 1982] was a noted aeronautical engineer and inventor who's greatest professional achievement was the development of the variable wing, commonly known as the Flower flap. The Fowler flap is a high lift device located on the trailing edge of an airplane wing that increases wing area and lift. Fowler was highly respected in the aeronautical field and was awarded 20 patented inventions along with the John Price Medal for his development of the Variable Lift Airplane Wing.
Flaps are used on airplanes to improve the lift characteristics of a wing. In 1924, Fowler invented a new type of flap, still in use today on modern aircraft. It took another 10 years or so to make it into commercial application. This book not only provides technical data and many photographs on the designs of these flaps as of 1948, it also tells some of the story from Fowler's perspective.
