Song of Riddles is an inquiry into the meaning behind the metaphors that animate the Song of Songs, based on a wide range of source materials and scholarship. The core question prompting this inquiry into the Song of Songs is whether, given the opaque literary confines of the text, it is possible to access the Song's intended subtext, using the text itself as a guide in uncovering its underlying theological message. The nexus between metaphor and meaning in the Song lies at the point at which the three planes of dream-fantasies, riddles, and love wisdom intersect. Understanding how the Song functions simultaneously on these independent trajectories is the first step toward arriving at the concealed meaning of the Song's seemingly impenetrable metaphors. The research presented in this book demonstrates the Song to be part of the rare literary genre of riddles and points to the two lovers in the Song as hinting to the Temple keruvim. These angelic figurines were the sequestered keepers of the Holy Ark and the Divine law, as well as the representatives of the nation of Israel before the Divine presence. The approach to understanding the Song presented in Song of Riddles seamlessly and authentically merges the traditional rabbinic allegorical approach to the Song with the plain sense of the text.… (plus d'informations)

I received this through Librarything early reviewers and just finally got around to finish reading it. Why did it take so long? Well, this reads like an academic term paper and has no flow and is not particularly easy to read. Normally I like term paper style but I don't know enough about this to really understand at all what is going on. There is a huge amount of translations yet I would have assumed that there would be more understandable commentary to help someone understand what it means. ( )

Song of Riddles:Deciphering the Song of Songs is an interesting attempt by the author to explain
this poem as a passionate love relationship between humans and the Divine. Geula Twersky invites the
reader to “join in the search for the theological meaning”. I am skeptical about this argument. Because of the erotic nature of this poem, I have never thought of it as anything but a love poem about and between humans. The author has gathered terminology from other biblical authors who use similar themes, motifs, images and text to explain a hidden meaning as to how this could be shown as God’s passionate love for his people. My question here is which biblical author is borrowing from whom?
I definitely would encourage other readers, interested in trying to understand meanings of biblical writings, to read this book. It is well written and easy to follow her explanations. ( )

The Song of Riddles is a lovely way to start the year - actually Ive been dipping in and out of it for a few weeks now.

It's a deep dive into the Song of Solomon of the Old Testament Bible with lots of time to wallow in the poetry and also read the the analysis too.

They say a joke you have to explain isn't a good joke.

Well sometimes hearing a poem explained - teasing out the secret forgotten references, the little asides, the Biblical half quotes - makes the expedience deeper and richer.

And here the little asides and jokes are deeper and better in the original language.

It's a very sensuous piece of love poetry and a deep and rich allegory and so so much more. Really enjoyed this one. ( )

I have read the Song of Songs in the past, but only with a very shallow understanding of the book. Twersky's book has dramatically broadened my thoughts about the Song of Songs. She opened my eyes to the possibilities that this biblical book holds. As a warning, it requires deep thought from the reader, but it is well worth the effort. Her treatment of the text is very thorough. She dissects and explains it in such a way that the reader can think about the text in small bites. This is an enlightening study of the Song of Songs and I will most probably read it again to gain better insight. ( )
