DI Kelly Porter knows some people will risk everything to get ahead. But when the truth comes out deadly prices are paid...

After a scandal forces DI Kelly Porter out of the Met, she returns to her home turf in the Lake District. Crimes in the Cumbrian constabulary tend to be of the minor sort, but Kelly begins work on a cold case that shocked the local community ?? the abduction and brutal murder of ten-year-old Lottie Davies.

Meanwhile, Kelly is also investigating two seemingly straightforward crimes: a case involving an illegal immigrant, and a robbery following the death of local businessman Colin Day. But evidence comes to light that reveals a web of criminal activity beyond anything Kelly imagined. Behind the veneer of sleepy, touristy towns lies a dark and dangerous underworld. As Kelly threatens to expose those with much to lose, she risks paying the ultimate price to get to the truth...

Don't miss this taut and gripping debut from a crime writer to watch. Perfect for fans of Carol Wyer, Patricia Gibney and Angela Marsons.

Like a lot of the books I've been reading lately - this started off slow but I came to really enjoy it. The story initially starts with three storylines but it became more interesting as the storylines became entwined. The fighting between Kelly and her sister seemed a bit juvenille for a thirty something woman but family. The mystery was interesting and I loved Gabriela. Kelly was alright. The villains of the tale are more fleshed out than the main cast, it wasn't until near the end any of the main cast were distinguishable in any way. But while not big on character development, the book is big on procedural goodness and faithfully recounts the trail of every lead and tips to wrap up the mystery in a nice pretty bow. Solid 3.5 stars. I rounded down to three stars because it annoyed me that Gabriela wasn't taken into police custody. If you have a case where all the witnesses keep going missing and are presumably dead - why wouldn't you protect the witnesses you do have. Seemed like a major oversight and it annoyed the crap out of me. ( )

This excellent thriller exhausted me. I had many matchstick moments, desperately trying to keep awake late at night to read on and desperately wishing my eyes would read the words as quickly as the action was unfolding!

After being let down in the Met, by a colleague, D.I. Kelly Porter returns to her roots in the Lake District and transfers to the Cumbrian police force. If she thought crimes were going to be a bit milder here, she finds she’s very much mistaken. She reopens an old case…a distressing one involving the murder of a young child and at the same time investigates when a local businessman is found dead in a nearby hotel. Lottie’s case is heartbreaking but requires closure, especially for the mother, and the other is seemingly straightforward. But as Kelly digs into evidence in both cases, she discovers that crimes in Cumbria can be as far removed from mild than she ever imagined.

This is an exceptionally well-crafted plot...and extremely well characterised…from the devious, hideously perverted, amoral, seedy characters, to the innocent, virtuous and law-abiding. Whilst the criminals in this story are very likely not going to be seen again, Lynch left plenty of scope for further development of Kelly and her team in further stories. Don’t get me wrong…that doesn’t mean it was lacking in this one!

A terrific, gripping, fast-paced thriller…I sincerely hoped this was going to be the start of a long line of DI Kelly Porter instalments, so I was ecstatic to find I could pre-order the next one, due later this year. A very very easy decision! ( )

I really enjoyed reading Dark Game, the first book in the DI Kelly Porter series. It was a tense read, particularly towards the end. The characters were great too. I got really involved in the plot and kept wanting to find out what happened next. ( )

Debut author Rachel Lynch opens with an exciting detective series! In Dark Game, DI Kelly Porter is back in her home town handling rather mundane cases. But then, she begins to investigate the cold case of the murder of ten-year-old Lottie Davis. She is also assigned another two cases which also sparks her interest. One involving an illegal immigrant and the other, the death of an old man found in a hotel. Kelly quickly learns that his death is part of a huge puzzle, These are no open and shut cases. What Kelly discovers is a dark net of criminal activity. Her quiet home town has deep dark secrets.

What a thrilling book! I was pleased to read this in one sitting. It is a great read, with an excellent theme, especially watching the quiet little town exposed as hiding dark and dangerous criminal behavior. I am looking forward to reading Deep Fear, Book 2 in this series. ( )
