Summary:
This book was good, yes. The story was engaging and kept me reading, but then again I love a good zombie story. This story was a first for me in that it was POST zombie apocalypse and we were really seeing what happened after things started to get under control. Nothing actually felt "apocalyptic" in this book. There were still movies being made, Internet, electricity. Even Sephora managed to stay in business through the whole thing. So if you're expecting to a read a zombie book in which people are scrounging for food and living in caves, this book is not for you.
Instead, this book focuses on the reintegration of formerly rabid "Rotters" and the challenges they face in their community. Beacon Hills suffered greatly during the Rising, and reintegration is something of a controversial topic for many residents. Stiles does not return home to a friendly, safe town filled with people happy to have him back. Yes, he has the support of the people closest to him, but he also returns to a town filled with fearful people. And we all know how dangerous fearful people can be.
The Sterek in this is . . . low key? I guess? It is most definitely NOT the focus of this book. Other readers will disagree with me (and they have already written wonderful reviews so go read them) but for me, I really felt like the entire Sterek relationship, while sweet, was just a secondary storyline to the main focus of reintegration. I didn't connect with Derek very much and I felt more interest in the relationship between Stiles and Scott. But the part of me that reads books with immortal characters and gets sad when I think of how lonely it must be to outlive the people you love is VERY happy Stiles and Derek will have each other. ( )
