I think Alice's adventures are so famous that I had certain expectations and it wasn't what I expected. I didn't particularly like Alice's Adventures in Wonderland to start with, but once I got into it, it was OK. It was obviously written for children, but the nonense that Carroll wrote didn't initially agree with me. It was something popular at the time I suppose. I got on better with Alice through the Looking glass. It was curious and the silliness was cleverer. They were both dreams of course, but understandly potty, full of curious characters prone to talk nonsense or recite incredibly long poems. Poor Alice got tired of this, as I'm sure the real little girl Carroll wrote for may have done too. But this book contained a selection of his very long poems: Phantasmagoria - a conversation with a ghost explaining the rules of haunting to the wrong homeowner as it turned out. I really quite enjoyed this one. The hunting of the snark was interesting. A sea dirge was forgettable. And finally a tangled tale was tangled indeed and not resolved as well as I'd hoped.
