The acclaimed author of the Thomas Covenant Chronicles launches a powerful new trilogy about a prince's desperate quest for a sorcerous library to save his people. Fire. Wind. Pestilence. Earthquake. Drought. Lightning. These are the six Decimates, wielded by sorcerers for both good and evil. But a seventh Decimate exists--the most devastating one of all... For centuries, the realms of Belleger and Amika have been at war, with sorcerers from both sides harnessing the Decimates to rain blood and pain upon their enemy. But somehow, in some way, the Amikans have discovered and invoked a seventh Decimate, one that strips all lesser sorcery of its power. And now the Bellegerins stand defenseless.   Prince Bifalt, eldest son of the Bellegerin King, would like to see the world wiped free of sorcerers. But it is he who is charged with finding the repository of all of their knowledge, to locate the book of the seventh Decimate--and reverse the fate of his land.   All hope rests with Prince Bifalt. But the legendary library, which may or may not exist, lies beyond an unforgiving desert and treacherous mountains--and beyond the borders of his own experience. Wracked by hunger and fatigue, sacrificing loyal men along the way, Prince Bifalt will discover that there is a game being played by those far more powerful than he could ever imagine. And that he is nothing but a pawn...… (plus d'informations)

A prince of a small much beleaguered country goes on a quest to find a book of the sorcery he abhors to save his country. He has survived a mage strike which should have left him dead, and fears it was by the hated sorcery and he will betray the trust of his father and country. It is a rather solid lump of a nearly hopeless story about a rather solid lump of a prince, but not too long and competently told, which is the least one can expect of Donaldson. ( )

I have enjoyed Stephen Donaldson's work since I first picked up The Illearth War back before I was old enough to shave... and again when I later revisited it with a slightly more mature viewpoint. So it is safe to say he is one of my favourite authors. With The Seventh Decimate, I can see that he is trying to build a world here and there are glimpses of more than just what the characters can see. It was the same with The Gap Cycle - the first is full of world development which sometimes made you wonder where we were going but every book afterwards grabbed you and took you on a journey such that you hated the long wait until the next book was released. However, with The Seventh Decimate, I struggled to keep enthused - and unfortunately, that was not helped by the narrator's consistent tone of everything being very earnest and concerning and about to explode. Indeed, sometimes, it hindered. Saying that, will I stop following Stephen's work? Probably not but I will want to see where it leads in the second book and beyond. ( )

Have never read Donaldson-really liked his writing style and plan to dig into some ofhis earlier works. ( )

Had to pick it up as I am a devoted follower of the Ur-Lord but I found this to not be of the same caliber. It had it's moments, but was quite predictable from early on so it seemed to drag on and on. ( )
