I got this in a GOODREADS giveaway... it was an ok read but it really didn't impress me... good storyline but ... ( )

This one didn't do anything for me - though I'm not a huge sci-fi reader, this one seemed a bit too formulaic. The characters were shallow and boring, the dialog amatuerish, the battles too techy sci-fi, skimmed thru the 2nd half to see if it would get better - it didn't. But it is set up for the next book - if you like this one. ( )

Two stars because the hovertext says "it was ok" and that's basically my feelings on this. Interesting scifi worldbuilding, but the plot is all paranormal-romance. Big strong werebear manly man, super exceptional woman unaware of her own killer bod who is magnetically drawn to his blah blah blah, you've heard this before. Competent example of the genre, but goddamn it I already had to scale back my urban fantasy reading because of this softcore romance bullshit, I don't need it in my scifi. ( )

"The conglomerate had made the line very clear – she was a product of their organization, and her brood was, too. They were all owned.

It was time for her to take her child – and then her freedom."

K.F. Breene’s Fate of Perfection is the first book in her Finding Paradise series. In a future where three major conglomerates (Moxidone, Gregon Corp, and Toton) essentially rule the world, they genetically engineer their employees to have the desired traits needed to keep their respective companies running. When Moxidone’s Millicent Foster – a brilliant coder and head of the weapons development department – gets chosen as a breeder, she starts to realize that maybe her life isn’t as perfect as she thought. Along Ryker, the master of security, she must devise a way to get her daughter Marie to safety, whatever the cost.

This book had a very interesting premise, reminiscent, in part, of Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World / Brave New World Revisited and Margaret Atwood’s Oryx and Crake . I enjoy a good science fiction book, especially one that delves into the moral and ethical issues of selective genetic breeding. Although Millicent, her daughter, and Ryker were all natural-born, the majority of the populous was lab-born, scientifically bred with select genes from a large number of donors. Although Breene didn’t explicitly provide too many details, it was mentioned in passing that those that were lab-born were often not as intelligent or as high-ranking as those that were natural-born, and more than once Millicent implied that they were almost lesser. Clones were also mentioned as being utilized as organ donors for those important higher-ups, such as Millicent.

Although this premise of a corporate-controlled future invested heavily on advancing both evolution and technology, I think the message got slightly lost – or at least side-tracked – in the romance. The romance, in my opinion, did not add anything spectacular to the story. I was more interested in the drug Clarity, which was given to the conglomerate employees to suppress the brain chemistry responsible for sexual attraction. However, the romance was sloppily done and the characters – especially Ryker, which his toxic masculinity and overprotectiveness – came off as horny teenagers rather than adults trying to escape from a dangerous situation.

I struggled to rate this book because, even though I did enjoy the overall premise, the romance did more harm than good for me. Ultimately, I decided on a solid three stars for the science fiction aspect of the story with the intent of mostly trying to forget the unrealistic romance.

Now, it's time to go see what happens in Fate of Devotion (Finding Paradise #2)!
