Well, this beautiful book is not reminiscent of the Greece experience I had while backpacking thru Europe in the 80's - thankfully. I do remember the runners - so glad I never met this crew, my hostels, "pensions" etc were much nicer and safer then the ones depicted in the novel. That being said, this is both a beautiful and ugly novel. The writing is dreamy, invoking, poetic. That however, means that sometimes I wasn't sure what exactly was going on - which was frustrating. Facts are not the point here - emotions, descriptions, sensory experiences are what I got with this novel, and I am okay with that.

I will never understand how people can live like this, choose to live like this, but that is why I read books - to try to get there! This is one of the rare books that I would reread, just such beautiful writing! (
