"A tense and haunting literary jigsaw puzzle in the vein of Jennifer Egan's A Visit from the Goon Squad, Julianne Pachico's debut novel, set during the ongoing civil war in Colombia, is a prismatic tale about a group of characters whose lives intersect in often unexpected ways"-- "Taking place between 1993 and 2018 in Colombia and New York City, The Lucky Ones is a prismatic tale of a group of characters whose lives intersect in often unexpected ways and whose stories, taken together, provide a lens on the intensity of life in Colombia during the violent years of guerrilla insurgencies and corruption. A teenager hides alone in her family's mansion until she hears a knock at the door...her teacher is kidnapped by guerrillas and teaches Shakespeare in the jungle to a class of sticks, leaves, and stones...another classmate, now a young woman in New York, straddles past and present, unable to live in either without the help of the little bags of powder she carries with her. Showcasing a brilliant new literary voice, The Lucky Ones is both steeped in realism and has a hallucinatory feel--whether from the heat of the jungle, the drugs, or the surreal quality of a world in which the super wealthy have pet lions, people you love can disappear in an instant, and at any moment there might be a knock at your door"--… (plus d'informations)

I wasn't enjoying this book per se, but it was going along inoffensively enough for me to keep reading when something very strange happened. There was a scene, told from the perspective of rabbits, where an older rabbit just ejaculates everywhere. Literally just jizzes in the middle of the scene. I was pretty much over the book at that point. It was off-putting to say the very least.

As for the rest of the book (which bills itself as a novel, but is written in the now inescapable style of interwoven short stories), it was mostly unremarkable. The first two stories were the best written, but the rest range from boring to "why??". ( )

This felt like an experimental novel, with narratives from a multitude of characters (including rabbits...) and I found myself feeling dissatisfied, confused and frustrated. Rather than learn more about a place and period in recent history, I learnt only that I should stay away from experimental writing! ( )

This collection of stories takes place primarily in Columbia during war, and in New York. It is a mélange of stories about characters that fit into each other’s lives in strange ways.

It is not easy to write a review about this book. First,it is comprised of random stories with some of the same characters. They do not fit together well. Second, this story rambles in psychedelic fantasy that is oftentimes disturbing. However, in order to give a fair review, I forced myself to read the book in its entirety. At times, it wasn’t easy.

I wanted to like this book, hoping to find some treasure in it, or in its message. I did not.

I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review. ( )

I won this in a GOODREADS givaway -- The Lucky Ones by Julianne Pachico --This is more an anthology than a novel; the theme is woven throughout. There was great vibrancy and intensity in the characters and their stories. ( )

Well, I had a good run of ARCs that didn't have something bizarre in them. No squid sex or unexpected aliens or guess what someone has multiple personalities and we're like sixty percent of the way through the book before we even mention it once. I'd even started getting into The Lucky Ones. I wasn't that enthused after the first two or so chapters (each one a self-contained slice of characters that are all inter-related somehow in Columbia's many and varied civil wars/war on drugs/insurgencies/etc.), but then I got into the rhythm, wasn't thrown off by the jumping perspectives, the changes in viewpoint, even the second-person (you, we, etc.) parts.

Then rabbits. On cocaine.

Not just rabbits on cocaine. Rabbits on cocaine from their perspective because, of course, their thoughts and everything would be exactly like humans. Word-for-word.

One of the rabbits smokes a crack pipe.

And so, my respect for the novel was pretty much ruined. I tried. I really did. I got to the end. I thought all the different connections between the characters were interesting. I could see it all in my mind, the locations, the people, the sounds, but, no matter what, this is a book where a rabbit smokes a crack pipe and my mind is so small and petty that that's all I'm going to be able to associate with it.

The Lucky Ones by Julianne Pachico went on sale March 7, 2017.

I received a copy free from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. ( )
