The third book in the 'Severing' series is just as amazing, filled with tension, and close to horror as the first two. Expect a mystery that needs solving, an evil threatening everything that Terrance and Alex have achieved in the previous books, some great characters, and a wonderful love story. Where the first two books focused on Terrance, who interacts with dead people "in limbo", and Alex, his lover who learns to deal with all that entails, this third book is about Terrance's long lost son, Gabriel. I really looked forward to finding out more about him, and must say, I was not disappointed.

Gabriel is a young man with a pretty horrific history. Kept prisoner by a sadist for years, Terrance finally set him free, and that allows him to lead a somewhat normal life. He goes to high school, falls in love, and turns eighteen. Which is exactly when the "normal" part stops and things get crazy again. As if Gabriel hadn't been tested enough, he has to survive one more ordeal, only this time, more than his own life and happiness hang in the balance. His supernatural abilities grow by leaps and bounds and he has to learn to deal with them on top of anything else. If he weren't such a strong man, he'd certainly give up this time. I was horrified and fascinated at the same time and can only warn you: if you don’t like stories about evil wanting to take over the world and demons all over the place, stay away from this book.

Terrance and Alex are a reassuringly well-known presence in this book. They are clearly very much in love, and have learned to work well together, yet the current crisis tests them as much as everyone else. They are very supportive not only of each other but also of Gabriel, and that makes them a real family amidst all the chaos.

If you like to be horrified and shocked by evil characters and forces that come out of nowhere, if you enjoy a good mystery and fight against overwhelming odds, and if you're a fan of The Severing series, you will probably like this book as much as I did. ( )
