"Saying goodbye to Scotland is the hardest thing Jenna MacDuff has had to do-- until she met Lord Pembroke. Jenna's small clan has risked their lives traveling the countryside as masons, secretly drumming up support and arms for the exiled King James Stuart to retake the British throne. But their next job brings them into enemy territory: England. Jenna's father repeatedly warns her to trust no one, but when the Duke of Keswick hires the clan to build a garrison on his family estate, it seems she cannot hide her capable mind from the duke's inquisitive son, Lord Alex Pembroke. Nor her growing attraction to him. When he begins to return those forbidden feelings, she finds that she's thrust into a precarious position-- keeping her newfound friendship to the duke's son a secret from her father, while concealing her father's treason from an increasingly attendant Lord Pembroke. But there's a covert plan behind the building of the garrison. Will Jenna decide to keep her family's mutinous secrets and assist her clan's cause? Or protect the you man she's falling for and keep him safe? No matter which she chooses, someone will pay a deadly price" -- Dust jacket. Aucune description trouvée dans une bibliothèque |

Jenna McDuff is a self-reliant, self-confident, unusually educated 16 year old Scot living in the early 1700's. Her father is leader of a group of stone masons who travel all over the country to construct buildings. Jenna has traveled with them since the death of her mother, but some are wondering if she might be a liability. They are bound by a secret agenda - to put King James on the throne of England. They are Jacobites. While constructing a garrison on an Englishman's estate, Jenna gets to know the Duke's son, Lord Alex Pembroke. Alex is engaged to a Sicilian woman as an arranged marriage to further the fortunes of both families. Civil unrest is afoot, and Jenna must always be circumspect in her conversation and decorum, lest she attract any attention to her family and their secret activities. She is a strong character, if a stereotypical ravishing redhead who is unaware of her beauty. She is skilled with bow and arrow and keeps a knife strapped to her ankle which she has drawn more than once in self defense. There is much adventure, suspense, and intrigue in this well crafted tale. ( )
