Investigating the disappearance of a secret Romulan fleet, the U.S.S. Titan, commanded by Captain William Riker, is unexpectedly propelled more than 200,000 light-years into the Small Magellanic Cloud. One of the Milky Way's satellite galaxies, the Cloud is also home to the Neyel, the long-sundered offshoots of Terran humanity, with whom the Federation has had no contact in over eighty years. Nearby, Riker's uncertain ally, Commander Donatra of the Romulan Warbird Valdore, rescues a young Neyel, the survivor of a mysterious cosmic upheaval that seems at times to be both unraveling and reweaving the very fabric of space...the fulfillment of an apocalyptic vision that has already claimed millions of lives. Titan's science team soon finds evidence that the ravaging of Neyel space is the work of a vast and powerful intelligence: the stirrings of a dormant consciousness that is maintaining the existence of the Small Magellanic Cloud -- and all life within it -- from one moment to the next. And if it should awaken, the consequences are unimaginable. As Riker considers his options, his new crew struggles with the scientific and philosophical implications of what they've discovered...while the young Neyel in their midst forges a bond with the captain, conjuring old ghosts Riker has yet to lay to rest.… (plus d'informations)

I really want to find a toe-hold into this series but they are so poorly written aahhhh! I finished a Terry Pratchett novel then went to pick this back up midway, read three paragraphs and then said "Argh I can't read this!!" The contrast in quality was too stark to handle. Melora hops like a desert bird?!? Someone got paid to write this?

I really love Riker captaining the Titan, which is a cool ship and interesting crew. I will chug along a few more in this series because some of the later ones have different authors. But I only recommend this to a die hard Trek fan who isn't in a mood to be troubled by poor quality prose. ( )

The Red King is the second part of the Titan-Trilogy, that continues the events of Star Trek after last film (Nemesis). It is nice entertainment for those who watched the tv series and want to know more about Riker’s future as captain. Deanna Troi and Tuvok are also part of the Crew. Except for those the crew mostly consists of non-humanoid species, so one really has to stretch their imagination and memory to “see” the characters right.
A bonus of the German audiobook is the narrator: Detlef Bierstedt was also the German voice for Wil Riker, so even the narrator sounds “Trekkie”. He still manages to gives every character their own voice. You can literally watch another episode in your head while you listen to the audiobook. Usually I prefer the English audiobooks, but in this case I might even make an exception if there were an English audiobook.

Andy Mangels and Michael A. Martin have moved onto my short list of Star Trek authors who can be counted on for a good read. This volume features the continuing adventures of Captain William Riker’s first command, the USS Titan and its diverse crew.

Published in mass-market paperback by Pocket. ( )

If seeds in the black Earth can turn into such beautiful roses, what might not the heart of man become inits long journey towards the stars? -- G. K. Chesterton
Penetrating so many secrets we cease to believe in the unknowable. But there it sits, nevertheless, calmly licking its chops.--H. L. Mencken
"He's dreaming now," said Tweedledee: "and what do you think he's dreaming about?" Alice said "nobody can guess that." "Why about you!" Tweedledee exclaimed, clapping his hands triumphantly. "And if he left off dreaming about you, where do you suppose you'd be?" "Where I am now, of course," said Alice. "Not you!" Tweedledee said contemptuously. "You'd be nowhere. Why, you're only a sort of thing in his dream!" "If that there King was to wake," added Tweedledum, "you'd go out -- bang! -- just like a candle!" "I shouldn't!" Alice exclaimed indignantly. "Besides, if I'm only a sort of thing in his dream, what are you. I should like to know?" -- Lewis Carrol

While working on this book, I had the opportunity to serve my local community in fundraising and leadership arenas. Many people gave me immense support, and I dedicate this book to Marc Hoffman, Steve Suss, Jerry Dalke, and Rick Watkins & Les Lewis. Gentlemen and friends, may your ships always sail true.
This is for my wife, Jenny, whose patience during the writing of this volume deserves special recognition here; and the space visionaries of NASA, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and the European Space Agency who this very year successfully landed the Huygens probe on Saturn's moon Titan, thereby providing humanity's first glimpse of the surface of our eponymous starship's mysterious namesake.
