It’s 1942, all of Europe is at war. The Nazi war marching is rolling through eastern Europe and is now in Ukraine. 12-year-old Anton, a child of Jewish heritage in Ukraine, is hiding in a cave outside of his small community trying to escape the persecution of the Gestapo and their ruthless leader, Major Karl von Duesen. Major von Duesen is fixated on finding every Jew out there and killing them or sending them to a camp far from home. Find out about the imminent struggle Anton and his uncle and grandmother have along with other Jews will encounter in their fight for survival. This is a book I found at the book fair my school had in October and was immediately drawn to the illustration on the title. It was very appealing to me. Four of my students bought this book, so it was a very popular book at this year’s book fair. I checked this book out of my school library and found the book to be very easy to read. It gave readers a different perspective about the Holocaust because the plot didn’t occur inside of a camp. Good relatable book for Social Studies for students to learn about the Holocaust.
