**Winner of the Moonbeam Children's Book Award Silver Medal for Non-Fiction --Picture Book** This Cambodian children's book teaches that not even the most terrible brutality can destroy the human spirit. The Cambodian Dancer, a Cambodian book for children, is the true story of a Cambodian refugee -- a dancer and teacher -- who built a life in the US after fleeing the Killing Fields of the Khmer Rouge. She then became a counselor to other Cambodian refugees and created a school of dance for children. Her gift of hope was to teach children in the Cambodian community the traditional dances of their country, so young people growing up far away from the land of their ancestors would know about their culture. In plain but straightforward language and colorful illustrations, this multicultural children's story communicates to children a sense of the joy, sadness, injustice, and triumph that lives on in young Cambodian Americans. It shows that it is possible to overcome great hardship and that a single decision can do much to heal one's self and others. This touching Cambodian book for kids brings a message of positivity to a true story of human hope and resilience.… (plus d'informations)

The Cambodian Dancer by Daryn Reicherter is true story of an actual Cambodian dancer whose land was destroyed and forced out of her country, losing her home and what she loved most. Overall I did enjoy this book and it was a very easy read, however I felt like I had read many stories like this before, and therefore it felt unoriginal. I did also notice a grammar error or too that would sound awkward if someone were doing a read aloud. The illustrations were very vibrant and colorful which will bring the readers' attention to the story. ( )

While I enjoyed the story, I did think the text was a bit juvenile, at least in terms of the age it is intended for. The illustrations are beautiful and the author's note at the end is enlightening. I wish the Khmer at the end of the book, retelling the story, had been written on the same pages as the English. It would have been a more poignant visual. ( )

The text and illustrations in The Cambodian Dancer share a beautiful symmetry. Children who do not know where Cambodia is or what the Khmer Rouge will still enjoy this beautiful story of passion, perseverance, and personal triumph.

Pros: Beautiful illustrations bring Cambodian Khmer dance from the page. The narrative's simple prose complement the imagery perfectly.
