Fogo Island, Newfoundland, is home to Irish immigrants who fished for generations, until the cod were sucked away by factory fishing. But many remain on this island that sees only two months of warm weather. The author, a professor of architecture, went to Fogo to study and ended up buying one of the houses that have been "launched" (moved) around the island for years. The open hospitality of the small communities on the island make the reader want to hop planes and boats to get there. Much of the book is detailed drawings of structures that might not be of interest to most, but the photos and the words of the residents are enough to make this a lovely visit to somewhere almost off the map. One of the best studies of vernacular architecture and winner of the prestigious Winterset Literary Award is now available ina paperback edition. Tilting is author Robert Mellin's personal account of the houses, outbuildings, furniture, tools, fences, docks, and way of life of a fishing village on a small island far off the Canadian coast. Part journal, part sketchbook, part oral history, Tilting is a treasure chest of a book that offers new discoveries with each reading and a reminder of the simpler aspects of life and building.
