At this moment in time, Pamphlet Architecture (PA) is looking forward to its 36th iteration: “Buoyant Clarity” by Christopher Meyer, Daniel Hemmendinger, and Shawna Meyer. Started by architect Steven Holl and bookseller William Stout in 1977, PA has had some lasting legs, even if its one-per-year output hasn't been entirely consistent over the last 40 years. By the time I learned about PA, in the early 1990s in architecture school, finding copies of the early, out-of-print issues was difficult, if nearly impossible. So I was ecstatic when Princeton Architectural Press, which has been responsible for the individual post-10 PA issues, put the first ten issues into a handsome hardcover volume. With each issue done by an individual architect tackling one theme of their design, the contents are varied, though Steven Holl is responsible for four of the first ten; a sign of his willingness and enthusiasm for the small books but perhaps also a sign of the difficulty in getting others to contribute. Whatever the case, I'd say six of ten are great: the four Holl issues (Bridges, The Alphabetical City, Bridge of Houses, and Rural and Urban House Types) plus one each by Lebbeus Woods (Einstein Tomb) and Zaha Hadid (Planetary Architecture). I could probably do without the others – by Mark Mack, Lars Lerup, Livio Dimitriu, and Alberto Sartoris – but the completist in me is still happy they are there. To celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the founding ofPamphlet Architecture, we are proudly reissuing the first ten issues-most of which have been long out of print-in one hardcover volume. This graphically stunning and theoretically stimulating collection includes the early works of many of today's best-known architects, including Steven Holl, Lars Lerup, Mark Mack, Lebbeus Woods, Zaha Hadid, Livio Dimitriu, and Alberto Sartoris. The Pamphlet Architecture series was founded in 1978 by architects Steven Holl and William Stout as a venue for publishing the thoughts and works of a younger generation of architects. Each issue was written, illustrated, and designed by a single architect, which gives each its unique character. The series, which received an American Institute of Architects award, continues to influence new generations of architects as it disseminates new and innovative ideas on architecture and presents thework of the luminaries of tomorrow.
