For Steve Chase, being a faithful friend and follower of Jesus has always meant being engaged in nonviolent revolutionary work to bring about a beloved community which embodies spiritual wisdom, social justice, and ecological sustainability. His understanding of this call is informed by the Jewish prophets, Jesus, early Quakers, the life example of Martin Luther King, Jr., and by decades of reflection on his own and other people's stories of working to help heal and repair the world. In this pamphlet, written in part as a response to the Kabarak Call for Peace and Ecojustice, Steve distills the core features of the spiritual call to faithful activism and urges us to rise above the understandable, but debilitating, sins of denial, despair, and distraction. For Steve Chase, being a Quaker has always meant being called to serve in a nonviolent revolution to bring about the beloved community, which "embodies respect and care for the community of life, ecological integrity, social and economic justice, democracy, nonviolence, and peace." His understanding of the is call is informed by the life of Martin Luther King, Jr., by the witness of Friends from past generations, by biblical prophecy, and by decades of reflection on his own and others' experiences in service to these ends. In this pamphlet, Chase distills the core features of a call to faithful activism. Discussion questions included.

Chase tells some good stories as he challenges Friends to radical faithfulness, to a Spirit-based nonviolent revolution against the organized sin of our socioeconomic system. He quotes the Quaker Kabarak Call for Peace and Ecojustice, Martin Luther King, the Bible and present day religious activists. He is eloquent, engaging, well founded in Quaker faith, and persuasive.
Several special and wonderful aspects of this pamphlet include his use of M.L. King's inspiring words and history, which speak to both religious and secular people. Another aspect is his citation and explanation of the Kabarak Call from the Sixth World Conference of Friends held in Kenya in 2012. Many Friends will not know this moving statement. Another is his treatment of "fearful faithfulness," acknowledging our fears and resistance to the challenge to revolution and showing how faithful activists come through it (including M.L. King).
Chase reminds us that our embrace of the challenge to serve the beloved community is central to our Quaker faith, as we unite the inner and outer aspects of this faith. ( )
