NOT ENOUGH SPICE ARGHHHH. But the plot was so good, although i expected jack's secret to be juicier. but no, this book was gripping. get it? gripping? ( )

I was able to get through enough of this book to see that this could have been a fun read, but I was so annoyed by the first-person-present-tense that I couldn’t force myself to continue beyond the first few chapters. DNF at 40 pages.

I was reading this for the 2017 Romance Bingo, for the New Adult square. I guess I’ll have to find another book.

This laugh-out-loud chick lit novel is being made into a movie, and it should be a blast. The story is about Emma Corrigan, who lives in Islington, a district in London, with her flatmates Lissy and Jemima. She has a boyfriend, Connor Martin, whom she met at her workplace, the Panther Corporation, where she is a bottom level marketing assistant. Connor is cute but boring, reminding Emma of a Ken doll, as in Barbie and Ken. She keeps a number of secrets from him since she pretends to share a host of interests with him that she doesn’t share at all.

These secrets and more pour out of Emma to her seat-mate on a flight home from Glasgow, where she went for work. Emma was already terrified of flying, but the plane ran into turbulence. Thinking she was dying, she told her most intimate secrets (her weight! her underwear problems! her secret fantasies!) to the handsome stranger next to her.

When the handsome stranger turned out to be the founder of the Panther Corporation, and he showed up at her workplace, Emma was mortified. But more humiliation was yet to come . . . .

Even though you know from the start what will eventually happen, the path to the conclusion is pure delight. ( )

Honesty is the best policy

I don’t like books written in first person and the American hero uses decidedly British phrases. I wasn’t sure I was going to like this one. Until I did. It sucked me in. From a wallflower-people pleaser, Emma looks death in the face and inadvertently spills all her secrets to a stranger on a plane. Except that stranger turns out to be her boss. He provides her an ego boost and backing to speak the truth, a formative moment, and she feels empowered. Until all her secrets are broadcast on television and she is utterly humiliated. Out of her humiliation, Emma is transformed. Fabulous book. ( )
