This is a stunning novel that immerses us in the brutal world of the Roman Empire in the 1st century B.C. Annelise Freisenbruch is a gifted storyteller and tells a riveting tale. Highly recommended! Alison Weir "Annelise Freisenbruch's Hortensia is a delight - passionate, articulate, fallible and, better still, inspired by a real woman. This first tale of intrigue and murder is cleverly woven in with the turbulent history of the Roman Republic, and I'm looking forward to finding out what Hortensia will uncover next." Ruth Downie, author of the bestselling Medicus series IN THE ABSENCE OF HONOURABLE MEN, WHO WILL DEFEND ROME? The body of a Vestal Virgin is dragged out of the River Tiber... A senator bleeds to death in his bath... And as the authorities turn a blind eye, Hortensia, daughter of the capital's most celebrated orator, feels compelled to investigate a trail of murders that lead to the dark heart of Rome. Flying in the face of her husband's and father's attempts to protect her, rebelling against the constraints imposed upon her sex, she is drawn ever deeper into the corrupt underworld that lurks in the shadows cast by the city's all-powerful elite. When fires begin to rage in the slums and more key witnesses are silenced, only one man can save Hortensia from becoming the next victim of a conspiracy to destroy the Republic: Lucrio, the damaged ex-gladiator to whom she already owes her life. Then the secrets of his own tragic past threaten to subsume them both...… (plus d'informations)

Hortensia, the heroine, was based on a real woman living in the Roman Republic. The story was mediocre, but the author showed a flair in her writing. A Senator slits his wrists in suicide, then a Vestal is killed and thrown into the Tiber. Hortensia tries, along with her indulgent husband, Caepio, and the ex-gladiator, Lucrio, unravel the mystery. Everything was neatly wrapped up at the end. Use of nicknames was foolish. Would Hortensia's husband have been so forbearing and supportive in real life? ( )

Something slightly different in the way of Roman mystery stories - rather than being set in the high empire period like a lot of similar stories it's set around a 150 years earlier in the dying days of the Republic when Pompey and Crassus had triumphed and put a temporary end to civil wars, power struggles and coups.

The story is nicely anchored in history, and shows real scholarship - many of the main characters are known to history, even the main protagonist is not completely fictional.

The story basically follows one of the classic plots of intrigue and power politics, so I won't give any of it away except to say it's well written, and well enough grounded in the history of the period to allow you to suspend your bellief and believe for a moment that this is how things could have been ...
