Amy Plum, internationally bestselling author of the Die for Me series, delivers a heart-pounding adventure perfect for fans of Michael Grant, Veronica Rossi, and Alexandra Bracken. Until the Beginning is the sequel to After the End, which Marie Lu, New York Times bestselling author of the Legend series and the Young Elites series, called "wonderfully riveting." In this stunning and exhilarating conclusion to the duology, Juneau has been searching for her people and for answers . . . and she is about to find both. When Juneau's clan disappeared, she lost so much more than her friends and family. She soon discovered everything she thought she knew about her life was a lie. Her people's gifts were actually secret abilities that others wanted, desperately enough to kidnap an entire village. Juneau set off on a cross-country journey with her new companion, Miles, to find her clan, which led them to a game preserve in New Mexico. Now Juneau's people are finally within reach, and she will stop at nothing to save them. But she has a target on her back too, because unbeknownst to her she is the key to unlocking everything. To rescue her people-and herself-Juneau must discover what she and her abilities are truly capable of.… (plus d'informations)

1.5 Stars rounded up to 2 because the premise was good.

CW: Miles' mother committed suicide, blood, loss of loved ones, kidnapping, medical experiments.

Well that was disappointingly non-eventful. In the the first book the slow pacing made sense because there was some scene setting to do and relationships to develop. This book had no excuse for being so slow and boring. When the action sequences did occur they lacked tension and I felt like Juneau and Miles were underutilised. I prefer my heroines to flex their powers on the battlefield a lot more than what was displayed in this book. Underwhelming. ( )

Just like the first probably closer to a 3.5.
Good ending, nice character building... just over all okay. Nothing really fantastic, but nothing bad either. ( )

The sequel is much more implausible and gets more bogged down in discussions and explanations. Again, as a result of taking the Amrit, Miles is suddenly upgraded from 'ordinary human' to 'awesome superhero' just like Juneau. And all this helps them rather conveniently to beat the bad guys. ( )

Juneau and a now convinced Miles are trying to find the imprisoned clan members being held somewhere in New Mexico. When Miles is shot and they have to hide from his father as well as the group that Whit, former shaman of the clan, is working with, Juneau is tested. Not only must she cloak them, the vehicle and the cabin with invisibility, she has to save Miles' life. That results in her making a frightening choice and giving him Amrit. If she doesn't he's certainly going to die. He survives and begins to develop his own powers as they return to the road.
The closer they get to where the clan is held captive, the more challenging things become. Juneau has to become more comfortable with modern technology, while Miles has to wrap his head around the fact that not only was Juneau telling the truth about her powers, but he has them as well and must learn to use them quickly because he has no choice.
They have to break into a private hunting preserve that's guarded by mercenaries as well as a sophisticated electric fence. Once inside, they not only have to deal with someone desperate to get the Amrit, but must free the clan as well as rescue separately held hostage. Things are further complicated by the arrival of the other party interested in the formula just when it looks like Juneau and Miles are ready to make their escape.
The first part of this book is slower paced than book one, but that's because Juneau and Miles are getting to know each other while she's wrestling with how reality contradicts almost everything she was led to believe as she grew up in the Alaskan wilderness. However, once they start the rescue effort, the action is fast and furious, leading to a very satisfying ending. If you've read book one, you will certainly enjoy this one. If you haven't, you're in for a double treat. ( )

This was a satisfying resolution to the conflicts in "After the End". I liked seeing Juneau discover the truth about herself and her powers. Miles takes a similar journey and the things they both learn are complimentary. I also liked the theme that eventually there are consequences to the things you do. ( )
