I guess I'm on a comics kick right now? OK.

This is actually an adaptation of a Japanese novel (I didn't realize that), which was also adapted into a Tom Cruise movie a few years back, which I saw. So I had a rough idea of the story before starting. It would be nice to come into this without knowing what it's about, though.

Obata being the artist is one of the book's selling points, but anyone familiar with Death Note will know that he draws Light very similarly to the main character of this book. A little TOO similarly, perhaps. And the female counterpart is drawn rather too petite for someone who rages through a battlefield with a 200 kg axe. She doesn't seem to have enough muscle on her. So I was a little disappointed with some aspects of the characterization. Plus a lot of the action scenes were difficult to follow just because there was so much going on. I guess that's all just me not being used to manga styles, though.

Trying not to spoil anything, the ending and some of the plot details are a bit different from Edge of Tomorrow (the Tom Cruise/Emily Blunt movie), so if you've seen that, you're getting a very different story out of this. Also, I think the movie and the manga were produced around the same time, the manga's story more closely based on the book, so things like the appearance of the aliens are quite different. So it's worth reading this even if you've seen the movie! ( )

English translation of Japanese manga. The manga could have promise, except that Rita Vrataski looks like a Japanese manga girl instead of an adult woman, which is basically just disturbing and made the whole thing unreadable for me.

Made into the movie Edge of Tomorrow (or "Live, Die, Repeat: Edge of Tomorrow"). I think the movie is better than the book.

I guess I'd rank them this way:
1. The Edge of Tomorrow
2. All You Need Is Kill (novel)
3. All You Need Is Kill (manga)

Do I have to read the US comic too now ( )

I got this book for my birthday last year and was excited to finally get around to reading it. This ended up being a very well done science fiction manga that I enjoyed a lot.

Watching Keiji puzzle out what was happening with time loops and learn how to turn this to his advantage was interesting. It reminded me of the movie Groundhog Day, but more violent and science fiction themed.

I really enjoyed Keiji as a character; he changes and grows so much as the novel progresses. I also enjoyed the Full Metal Bitch aka Rita. The two have an interesting relationship together that enables them to take on the Mimics in a very intriguing way.

I loved that not only was this manga full of mystery, action, and aliens but also had some heart to it as well. It was an intriguing concept and the engaging characters really made it fun to read.

The illustration is really well done too and this only added to my enjoyment of this manga.

Overall a fantastic science fiction manga. This is an intriguing idea that really came alive because of the awesome characters and the way they grew and changed throughout the story. I would highly recommend to fans of sci-fi manga. ( )
