To me, this novel reads more like a romance than pure historical fiction. As I was approaching the end of the book I thought I would give it a respectable three star review. Being near to tears at the end, changed my mind.
Elizabeth of Lancaster, daughter of John of Gaunt and his first wife Blanche (he inherited the Lancaster title and wealth from his marriage to Blanche) is a bit of a mystery. After reading this novel I am left with a great deal of curiosity about the reality of her life, and will search for more information. Sparking that curiosity is the best element of historical fiction. ( )

Historical fiction my guilty pleasure - and this was a good one. The story of Elizabeth of Lancaster (cousin of Richard II, sister of Henry III, and married among others to the half-brother of Richard II) has to be pieced together from very limited information and a great deal of informed guesswork based on the author's considerable knowledge of the period and historical context. A very compelling and believable interpretation. ( )
