Ghosts are not just for Halloween anymore! Lynda Lee Macken's slim soft-cover book, subtitled "Stories of Mysterious People & Places in New York's Richmond County," covers more than 60 places &/or incidents involving ghosts. Be aware that Haunted History is not written tongue-in-cheek nor is it meant to be humorous. Ms. Macken takes her subject seriously, "Ghosts are real," she says, "& the former caretakers of the Perine House or some visitor to Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Fort Wadsworth, in addition to others who've had first-hand encounters, will bear witness to this fact." The book leads off with Conference House Park, which the author describes as "the Island's hottest ghost spot." In the 1920s while workmen were renovating the 17th century structure, they were scared off the site by specters & the sound of disembodied laughter. Some of the other well-known Island haunts include the Old Bermuda Inn, Cunard Mansion, Alice Austen House, Historic Richmond Town & Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church graveyard. The book presents the tales in a historical context that enhances & sometimes explains, the inexplicable occurrences. If you're ready for a chilling adventure read about the haunted history of Staten Island. Aucune description trouvée dans une bibliothèque |

The book is well-written, better than "Ghostly Gotham." It's an entertaining read for anyone curious about Staten Island's history, both earthly and supernatural. Staten Island has a long history with the supernatural world, dating back to the indigenous Lenne Lenape people, and the Dutch and English settlers. Trust me, I live here. This place is weird! ( )
