Cette critique a été écrite dans le cadre des Critiques en avant-première de LibraryThing. An military-trained assassin finds that he is unsuited to a civilian career. A representative from a super top secret governmental agency contacts him by phone to recruit him to join the Brownstone Group based on his military training. He knows this voice on the phone only as "Og." The reader is taken through the scenarios of several of the hits performed by the assassin. He prides himself on being able to kill each by a different method. One day it begins to dawn on him that all is not on the up and up with this supposed government agency. This is a quick and exciting read for fans of crime novels and thrillers. My thanks to the author and LibraryThing for a complimentary copy of this book. Cette critique a été écrite dans le cadre des Critiques en avant-première de LibraryThing. This book was a nice refreshing adult spyeque story. It reminded me of the Bourne series, and was predictable. Good read for those who enjoy espionage thrillers. Cette critique a été écrite dans le cadre des Critiques en avant-première de LibraryThing. An involving book that outlines the evolution of morality in a Military trained assassin who gained skills during service in Viet Nam. Once he was discharged as an ex-Major, he discovered that the skills he acquired as an Assassin didn't translate readily into civilian work. When he was contacted by a secretive individual who gave only the code name "Og" and the description of an allegedly top secret black agency that operated outside normal oversight and did wet work to further our national interests. Large operational funds were transferred into into Dominick's accounts and a very generous performance fee was also paid upon completion of the task. Dominick was given several I.D.'s and a phone number to leave a message for Og to contact him if additional information or tools were required for the job. He operated alone and in secret. The generous salary that was transferred into an off shore account sold Dom on the job, that and the belief that he was involved in a sensitive activity that protected our country and our precious freedoms. After several sanctions, Dom was in contact with a Federal judge that was targeted. He did research on the judge and found that he was a "Good Guy" and then wondered if his work was everything that he had been led to believe it was. The fact that the judge was a dog lover and dedicated to his own Setter led to further questions. Further research added to Dom's confusion over the legitimacy of his actions. He was already confused after completing a contract to eliminate a Catholic Priest. Dom expressed his concerns to Og and was asked to take some time off to get his head on right. He flew to a resort area on the Mexican coast for a little time away from the job and questionable moral actions. He met an attractive young lady, Annette Fatica who had a cover story that didn't alert Dom to the idea that she might also be competition. They shared a few dinners, drinks and then bed without any stress of entanglement. Apparently just two strangers seeking temporary comfort without any catches or obligations. When the vacation was over, Dom still had questions and concerns about his job and with over a million in his off shore account, he contemplated leaving his profession and locating on a small island off shore of south America living off his savings. Only after he discussed quitting with Og, did he recognize how unlikely they would let him "just leave". It wasn't the type of job that you could just leave without a major risk of being eliminated. Og made arrangements for Dom's exit after transferring all his money from his off shore accounts. Luckily, Dom had put aside some escape funds and documents with his favorite arms and managed to collect what he had after narrowly avoiding being eliminated. He was enraged but, in a controlled fashion you would expect from a controlled killer. He decided to find Og and get his earned money back as well as eliminate Og as a future threat. Dom's exceptional skills and physical abilities allowed him to eliminate the cadre that was sent after him to insulate Og from possible problems and legal involvement. The rest of the story detailed the extraordinary skills and luck that allowed Dom to survive, eliminate Og as a threat and recover his funds. I enjoyed the twists of Dom's trip and the creative efforts he exercised to accomplish his tasks. The emotional excursions Dom handled and survived was amazing. I found the exciting and entertaining story, especially the characters that were involved in the effort to leave the Brownstone group and Og's control well worth the investment in time and the promised review. This was a free book to me for the review effort. Cette critique a été écrite dans le cadre des Critiques en avant-première de LibraryThing. I’ve eagerly read all of Les Robert’s books and have rarely been disappointed. WET WORK is among his best. It’s well-written, fast-paced, and, with some exaggeration, sounds like things that have been going on in the US for awhile.Dominick Candiotti makes his second appearance. This time his US military training has led him to a very well-paid career assassinating Americans whose actions are detrimental to the US. He was recruited for the Brownstone Group by Og, a man he has never met but who contacts him by telephone. Soon after he executes a priest in a confessional, he is sent on his next mission. He finds the target but while planning the kill and the right time to act, he decides to research the target and comes across an article by the priest he killed. The article makes him question whether he is really working for a US government agency or if he is being fed a line to help someone get rid of his own enemies. WET WORK chronicles Dominick’s actions as he learns more about the Brownstone Group and tries to identify Og. Les Roberts proves that books do not have to be gory or sexy to tell their stories. Dominick recalls some of his earlier executions but not in gruesome detail. The sex scenes are not graphic, so the reader is not turned the reader into a voyeur. Les’s viewpoints on several social issues are worked into the plot and fit very well. Examples: “God is perfectly capable of fighting His own battles. Anyone with the power to smite with locusts or hurl down thunderbolts doesn’t need to put guns in the hands of unbalanced people loony enough to believe that they and He are on intimate speaking terms.” “But God doesn’t answer prayers by making deals. Is there a place in heaven for you if you go out and blow away everyone who happens to disagree with your point off view? I don’t think so.” I spotted only one contradiction, one repetition, and one geographical error. Not bad. Unfortunately, the book does have one of my pet peeves: some unnecessarily short chapters. I think they insult the reader’s intelligence. I always deduct one star for that.
This book was an okay read but really wasn't my cup off tea. It opened with lots of action but once further in I found myself not wanting to pick the book up and read again. I think if you are reading the series and invested into the characters you might love it though. Appartient à la série
