Das war mein ersten Deutschbuch, das kein Lernbuch oder Kinderbuch war. Es war ein Buch, das ich eigentlich gelesen hätte, egal auf deutsch oder auf englisch, weil es von einem interessanten Thema handelt. Es war ein bisschen schwieriger als zuerst ich gedacht habe, und hatte viele viele Wörter, die ich nicht gekannt. Das ist gut und schlecht für eine Deutschschülerin, oder? Alles hängt von der Motivation.

Nicht mehr über meine Herausforderungen bei Deutsch, jetzt über das Buch selbst. Ich fand die Geschichte insgesamt unbeschwert und interessant. Ich war überrascht, dass "die kämpfende Buchhandlung" fast kein Problem war. Für diese Buchhandlung war das Problem zu viele Kunden! Und als sie gewachsen ist, war ich glücklich. Aber ich war total überrascht und nervös, als sie die neue Buchhandlung gekauft hat. Ich dachte, "Nein! Ich will zu der originalen Buchhandlung besuchen! Sie können nich umziehen!" :) Kein Problem, die erste Buchhandlung immer noch existiert.

Manchmal gibt es nicht genug Information über eine Situation, z. B. als der sechszehnjähriger Sohn zurück nach Hamburg umgezogen ist. Die Schriftstellerin sagt nur, er totale Hamburger ist, ich immer die coole Mama bin. In ernst?! Diese kleinen Lücken sind nicht so schwer, dass sie den Spaß überwiegen.

«Y uno se ve con el parche tras la cámara, en la diligencia junto a John Wayne, al galope y con los indios pisándole los talones. Agárrense, porque es Petra Hartlieb, efusiva y pasional, temeraria y tenaz, lo que viene siendo una librera de ley, vamos, y con las sacas llenas de historias y libros.

«Ya ves, dos copas, una subasta en internet, y ¡zas!, una librería: la vida y sus cosas. Dejar atrás Hamburgo y su trabajo de crítica literaria, de ejecutivo editorial su marido, y sin casa, dos hijos, ninguna experiencia y con un préstamo tremendo, buscarán su futuro en una librería tradicional de un barrio vienés. Sí, el librero que esto les cuenta intenta moderar su entusiasmo, templar el ritmo y la alegría de poder reseñar este libro, porque Hartlieb va a lanzarnos a compartir lo que significa vivir (de) la pasión por los libros. ¿He dicho pasión? La locura de querer ser librero, y Petra sabe bien que "los motivos que tuvieron para ser libreros unos y otras, lo único que todos tienen el común es una cierta dosis de locura: la obsesión por los libros, que sólo se puede entender cuando uno mismo está poseído por ella". Y claro, yo también estoy envenenado. Todavía recuerdo, tras un amplio análisis de una asesoría para mi librería, cuando una fría burócrata me dijo seria: "El problema con los libreros, en la gestión de su negocio, es que están enamorados del producto, y pierden la perspectiva empresarial". Mi sonrisa fue homérica, y supo que no había nada que hacer, somos casos perdidos.

«Pero no se queden ahí, perdón, pasen, pasen, cojan el libro y abran la puerta de esa bella ilustración de Alejandra Manzano en cubierta, recorran sus páginas y sientan la emoción de compartir un sueño, con sus pesadillas, claro, plagado de anécdotas divertidas, clientes estrambóticos, escritores famosos, campañas navideñas, ayudantes libreras de día y músicas de Death Metal de noche, el agotamiento y la mala conciencia por la complicada conciliación familiar, luchar contra reformas imposibles que convierten la librería en una zona de guerra y gritos, comerciales que terminan comiendo pizza junto a tu hija que ya se ha acostumbrado al caos, presentaciones que acaban a la carrera, risas, lloros y libros, muchos libros porque, como dijo un ayudante que tuvimos un verano, "en una librería siempre es como el Día de Reyes", porque a pesar de pasarse uno el día moviendo cientos de títulos y contando mil historias y argumentos, cuando llegan las cajas de novedades nos tiemblan las canillas y las abrimos como si fuera el primer día, emocionados al ver a ese autor fetiche, aquella edición, pensando en el cliente exacto para esa historia, y al que harás feliz. Feliz, sí, porque esto es pasión con tintes apostólicos, pura diversión, o, como dice Hartlieb, los libreros siempre intentan "hacer lo que más les gusta y lo que mejor saben: contar historias, charlar con los clientes, envolver libros para regalar, divertirse".

«Lo sé, amas los libros, acabas de terminar este, embriagado por esa prosa ágil y directa, y ahora mismo te mueres por abrir una librería. Pues ya ves, avisado quedas, sólo te lo recomiendo si tu psiquiatra ha confirmado el diagnóstico, y éste es enajenación. Lo que es nosotros, los cientos y cientos de libreros que cada día os esperamos en nuestras pequeñas trincheras, ya no tenemos cura «todo lo demás nos parecería aburrido», y estamos afortunadamente condenados a "seguir porque no nos queda más remedio. Porque no hay nada que sepamos hacer mejor. Porque no hay nada que nos guste más".

P.D.: Ah, y no hacemos fotocopias, ni vendemos ese documento de hacienda, ni sabemos a qué hora pasa el autobús que va al centro, pero si vemos que te brillan los ojos al tocar ese libro, ése, vamos a llevarnos muy bien, querido lector, y esta ya es tu casa. Ein nettes Buch für Bücherfans und Menschen, die gerne in Buchhandlungen nach lesenswerten Büchern stöbern. Abstriche gibt es für die Textfehler, Rechtschreibfehler (gibt es keine Lektoren mehr?), welche im Gegensatz zum recht hohen Preis für dieses dünne Buch stehen. Abstriche gibt es für etwa 10 Seiten, auf denen ausschliesslich über Amazon geschimpft wird - ich habe dieses Buch übrigens über Amazon gekauft, so what - wenn ich als Buchhändlerin Amazon als allumfassendes Feindbild sehe, dann sollte ich als Autorin mich konsequent weigern, meine eigenen Bücher ebendort zu verkaufen. Die Autorin setzt sich und ihre Erfolge mit ihren Buchhandlungen etwas zu sehr in den Mittelpunkt und überzeichnet leider, vermutlich um lustig zu schreiben, wodurch es leider etwas zu konstruiert und verkrampft wird. ( )

Petra Hartliebs Bericht über das (Wieder-)Eröffnen einer Buchhandlung in Wien zeigt, dass Traumerfüllung und Berufung finden nicht automatisch für 24/7 Glücksgefühle sorgen, insbesondere dann, wenn die Berufung gefühlt zu einem 24/7 Job führt. Andererseits merkt man Petra Hartlieb die Leidenschaft an, mit der sie ihre Buchläden in Wien führt und sie ermöglicht einen kleinen Blick hinter die Kulissen. Beim Lesen hatte ich dann oft unsere kleine Buchhandlung im Ort vor Augen, die auch ich viel häufiger besuchen sollte.

Wer hier einen Roman der Art "die kleine Buchhandlung am .." erwartet, wird nicht zum Zuge kommen - wer aber auch den Traum einer eigenen Buchhandlung hegt, ist nach der Lektüre dieses Buches gewarnt.

Das Buch würde ich aber noch nicht zu den Sachbüchern rechnen, da der persönliche Erfahrnungsbericht im Vordergrund steht.

Insgesamt ein kurzweiliges Lesevergnügen. ( )

Reading a book about the very bookshop you buy many of your books is a bit weird and I kept wondering whether I would make a cameo appearance within the pages, though I only moved into the area in the early 2000s. Taking over a bankrupt bookshop in Vienna in the mid-1990s was daring. Petra Hartlieb and her husband were however well connected both in the local and German publishing scene, her husband was a trained bookseller and the bookshop is located in a wealthy, old-skewed area, set in the local administration building and close to a vibrant local market to provide lots of daily customers and impulse buys.

Her account as a small business owner in a grinding low margin business of the last milkman type is both funny and shocking to read. The well-read bookstore employees are actually paid just as paltry as other retail employees, thus the collection of oddballs Petra Hartlieb rescues, develops and forms her team with - a hint of the Channel 4 TV series world of Black Books.The physical part of the business is also remarkable. They are shifting thousands of books, ordering, moving, sorting and picking printed bundles of paper. Her low tech approach with inadequate storage means long hours and a rat race to keep up with the order cycle (especially during Christmas season). Still, it shows that a bookstore can still survive today - if it is in a good location, has dedicated and caring management and excellent connections to the literary scene, media and publishers.

They have recently taken over a second bookshop in the 9th district with a focus on Italian and French books. Both the worse location and the foreign language focus make it much harder business to sustain. Foreign language bookshops have been closing even faster than regular bricks-and-mortar ones as their core customers have noticed that the mark-up of the bookshop compared to online sellers is much higher than the value offered to the core customers. Most hurt, however, are those in need of basic assistance and recommendations to get into a foreign language, as the markets grinds away the friendly contact of a local bookseller.

The book combines a start-up success story, a relocation/home-coming from Hamburg to Vienna, a family history, a glimpse into the literary and retail world as well as an example of a bookshop as a community nexus, though not a Third Place. Recommended. ( )
