The key to her future is trapped in the past. In 1978, Jane Maxwell is celebrating her engagement to Will, a handsome American geophysicist, but though she should be deliriously happy, she is plagued by doubts. When tragedy leaves Will hanging between life and death, Jane's guilt makes her determined to save him somehow. In 1715, the Earl of Nithsdale joins the doomed Jacobite rebellion for Scottish independence. But the cause is lost and the Earl is sentenced to be beheaded. On a desperate and dangerous quest to find some answers, Jane finds herself swept away and trapped in the past. Convinced that saving Nithsdale will also save Will, Jane embarks on a daring and audacious plot to rescue the Earl from the Tower of London. Past and present become entwined in a gripping race against time - and both will be changed by one woman's determination. This is a thrilling time-slip adventure packed with action, romance and one of history's most daring escapes.… (plus d'informations)

"Tapestry" had a very slow start and there were times when I almost gave up. However, I am glad I persevered because the pace certainly improved once Jane was in the 1700s trying to save the Jacobite lord, William Maxwell, and I enjoyed the historical setting which McIntosh does so well. Unfortunately, though, there were sections of the book that were heavy info-dumps which I found overdone. While "Tapestry" was an okay read, it certainly wasn't one of Fiona McIntosh's best. ( )

I have just finished reading Tapestry by Fiona McIntosh. It is the type of story you have to keep reading just to see how the author manages to tie it all up. Jane Gardener (the heroine?) is transported back in time to a period over 200 yrs to when the ancestor of her fiance is facing death in the Tower of London, having been captured as a Jacobite rebel against King George of England. Her plan is to save him so as to save her fiance in the twentieth century from impending death from an assault. Did I like the book? No! The character of Jane comes across as shallow, who makes idiotic unbelievable decisions in the course of the story, with lots of inane, unnecessary info on toileting, illness etc back in Georgian England. Maybe I just didn't feel the magic in this story especially when I got to chapter 17 and found 18 pages of my copy of the book had been missed in the binding of it. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, although as I said, I had to read it to the end. ( )
